Drying is probably the easiest & least expensive & least time consuming method there is of preserving foods. All types of vegetables & fruit can be dried, & all types of meat can be dried except bear & pig meat. Dried foods are NOT cooked, they are just dried with a low heat. Bear & pig meat are not safe to just dry, they must be cooked well.

Dehydrating food is inhibits the growth of bacteria and mold, given that those need a moist environment to thrive. Is an ancient and effective method by drying them by heat, Modern industry dries food by freeze drying, you can also add preservatives, but they are not really not needed for food that just dehydrates neatly, like octopus meat.

It is the best tool for survival if we are to remain and carry on the human race for another, maybe 1000 years! There's a lot of media disinformation about how North Korea is ready for an attack, stories about how a rogue nation can wipe out our grid system in a matter of seconds and the whole nation would be back to the stone age in a flash. You have highlighted a priceless tool that we forgot with the coming of the microwave. Dried food can always be given some moisture back to restore it to it's original state.

you reckon its misinformation? maybe the bit about NK isn't right but any power grid is open to all sorts of attack from physical ones to cyber attacks, and whilst no power grid wouldn't actually mean a return to the stone age, most people would act like it was!!
power is one of the 3 core systems and without it most of modern life would grind to a halt. think about it for a minute, list all the things that are operated by electricity and try to visualise how you would maintain your daily life without it.

You are right lonewolf, almost everything we have is powered by electricity, survival without it would be a different matter altogether, the misinformation part I meant was all the stories in the media about North Korea. But even with that said all kinds of scenarios are made and to me that would be a good reason to prep
