    Good afternoon all,

Above is "current events" ... a great article to read for thinking this out for your own situation and preparedness.

Visualize / think what you'd do if given a half hour to GOOD. How will you evac: by walking ? motor vehicle ? bicycle ? boat ? Are you and the conveyance equipped ?

After an evac order lifted, can you return home and disinfect your boots PRIOR to walking into dwelling ? I keep a large dish washing type of basin next to door and in it is a 5 gal jug of bleach. Next to both is a 5 gal Army water can with some large rags woven under the handle section.

Remember the flood waters displace snakes and they'd rather be in your mildew-forming kitchen than outside chatting with the birds that are hungry. Consider humane snake removal from kitchen.

Drink no house water ! Cans of beer acceptable to drink. If hot, machs nichs, it doesn't make a differenct to an advanced-level Prepper.

We don't live with the threat every day, but it is a very realistic possibility, and we have come close to having to evacuate. We were fortunate we did not have to boil water, and were only stranded for a few hours. Floods that will block roads will prevent you from getting out, and will prevent help from getting to you. We had neighbors who evacuated for medical reasons just to be sure they weren't stranded.

Pragmatist, you are right. All the creepy crawly things are going to seek higher ground and shelter. Another danger is mold. For an asthmatic or someone with mold allergies flooding will send the mold count off the charts. My wife had to evacuate due to the mold.

Once again your world can be turned completely upside down in a heartbeat.

I got flooded out once from my previous home when a extreme down pour of rain put a river I was living by way up . We got water about 30 inches deep inside the home . We waded out at about chest deep as the house was already elevated up about 2 feet above ground level . We had no snake problems that day , though we have had to deal with a water moccasin inside the house . A problem deep south residence have to contend with in a flood is fire ants . They will float on top of the water in clusters and if you encounter a cluster they will attack and are quite painful if just one stings , so you can multiply those stings to about 100 . Those ants are not a rarity as they are everywhere on the ground even in normal times .

    Good morning Poltiregist,

I've had some fire ants here. Forgot the formula for D-I-Y drown them while floating stuff. It's basically dishwashing liquid soap and a couple of other ingredients. My backup was can of starting fluid.

dont live near a river, its called a FLOOD plain for a reason.
    other things to avoid:
dont live on a main road or one of those "rat runs" that people use to get to main roads.
dont live near electricity sub stations, telephone exchanges, motorway junctions, railway depot's or stations, hospitals, industrial or retail units or shopping malls, and especially dont live near an oil refinery or a filling station or a nuclear power station, for obvious reasons.
in modern life it may not be possible to avoid all the risks but we can limit the most obvious ones.
