Homesteaders have a way of making making use of raw lands. Raw land means uncultivated land where weeds, grasses, bushes and any other plants and trees grow. The usual method of homesteaders here is to burn the land that will take care of everything. If there are big trees, they cut it down first. And for convenience, they do the burning during summer. A burned land loses its property to be arable. What the homesteaders do is to let the ashes stay for a week or two before plowing a bit. Then they get earthworms which are usually found in fertile land near rivers. The will sow the earthworms in the partially plowed land. After 2 months, the land becomes arable and ready for planting in time for the rainy season.

Most people in my jurisdiction clear the vegetation first and then incorporate substantial quantities of manure into the soil. This is done just before the rainy reason to reap maximum benefits. Application of lime replenishes the soil to release bound up nutrients to make them available to plants.
