this thread came in handy, just in time. My SIL gave me a couple big chunks of bear fat. I'm going to render it down. Not sure with bear if it's tallow or lard but it will be useful.

Tallow is rendered & cleaned animal fat regardless of the species of animal it comes from.

I do period re-enactment, i use round ball and patch as ammo for a black powder musket. the period correct lubricate for the path was a mix off beeswax and tallow. I had a very hard time finding a lbs or two of tallow. However recently i have found a butcher that sells mutton, very hard to find as most people won't eat it . I will be mixing up a batch shortly . buy the way after shooting with this classic lub i have found the the barrel was coated with a teflon like coating that keep by barrel very clean as compared to other lub that i have used .

When I was a kid my granddad attempted to boil up some hooves and whatnot to make neetsfoot oil. He made the mistake of doing this too close to the house. Needless to say grandma put a kiabosh to the project, it was a smelly endeavor.
