A very useful skill to have is knowing how a map and compass work together. GPS is a great tool, but batteries and electronics have their outdoor limitations.

I always make it a point to pack along a compass and paper map whenever I plan to leave the paved road.

Doing so has not only helped me out of a few jams, I'm pretty dang sure it absolutely saved my life on one ocassion.

This is sound advice, it is always good to know how to use "self contained" items that do not need external input (batteries, cartridges for firearms, gas lighters etc).

Map and compass is a particularly valuable and one that can be easily practiced.
