    Any members using a motorhome/campervan?

I've just bought a 20 year old Mitsubishi Delica 4X4 campervan. Three owners from new, low mileage and in immaculate condition. Two faults highlighted by the seller, awning zips broken and leisure battery not holding charge both can be replaced/fixed.

Battery is 20 years old so can't expect much from it, I've got it hooked up to a pulse charged and we'll see how it goes.

Town tires fitted so I'll be swapping them out for something suitable for driving wet tracks.

Shopped on Amazon yesterday, two new deep cycle batteries, 2 X 100w solar panels, controller and a 4G antenna that I can mount outside easily.

Basically it will be a foul weather shelter for winter camps, most of the time I'll be pitching tent for cooking sleeping.

So, do you have similar? Does it get used much?

When we first moved on to our place it had absolutely nothing on it. We purchased a 30 year old travel trailer (in South Africa they called them caravans so not sure what they would be called in the UK).

After a bit of modification it made a very good tiny cabin. But Canadian winters are a problem and I mostly gutted it, added insulation and a tiny wood stove. Redid much of the interior so it didn't look like a failed decoration nightmare from the 80's. Ours will never be movable again so not quite what you mentioned at all but it was mobile once. I am still doing cosmetic work inside when time allows and it will be a mini guest house if any family is brave enough to come for a visit.

I have a 1997 class c 21 foot on a ford E-350. We’ve had it for a decade and I’ve beefed up the suspension, tightened up everything underneath, and put off road tires on it. We only do about 3 camping trips a year, mostly for subsistence activities. It’s backup purchase is our BOV in case of wildfires or other scenarios.

Also called caravans in the UK.

I'm not really worried about heating even in Scotland in mid winter its not often below -15c / 5f so good clothing, good sleeping bag and hot food and your fine. If you use a propane heater the combustion process produces a lot of water so you end up in a damp camper although I suppose I could run a small de-humidifier to cure that if I use a heater a lot. My van has the old fashioned strip lights so they have to go and I'll replace with LED. 3 way fridge is fitted, had it running off 12v DC and its working fine temp down to +4c which is perfect for food storage. Cheap inverter in the van that has to go, I'll fit a pure sine wave inverter. May need to change freshwater tank, its old and I've got a mild bleach solution in it, I'll flush it with clean water a few times and see how the water tastes. Need to lay a bit of cable trunking for new power sockets/Lan cable for internet and 4G antenna.

I might get one of those £100 Chinese Diesel heaters which get good reviews but ... I don't really need it but I like playing with gizmos.

I've lived in caravans and the problem is getting the heating right, get too many people in there and we had to turn the heating off, all that body heat!!overnight it got so cold I woke up with my nose half an inch from an icicle on the inside of the window!!!
and that was Cornwall not the highlands of Scotland.

I actually need to do Google-fu to check what the heck is Mitsubishi Delica. Around here its marketed as L300. And its a LEGENDARY vehicle for mountainous road, hauling agriculture produces, and everything else in between.

If I were you I replace that battery regardless of their type or purpose.

Good thinking on getting new battery. Here's an idea, rather than using photovoltaic solar, why not using the vehicle own engine (using inverter) to generate all the power? Using the vehicle own engine will simplified your logistic & space requirement by large margin.

If you have the budget, I also recommend provision for multi-band radio, and Ka-band satellite dome

First of all I don't have any experience outside tropical climate, but rather than sleeping in the tent, why not sleeping inside your vehicle. Sleeping inside the vehicle you have the benefit of being inside a manoeuvrable metal cage. You only need tent for cooking or maybe utility / sanitation tent

Sorry I no longer own any real asset (vehicle included). However my experience came mostly from my time as amateur (illegal) street racer and as amateur offroader (mountainous jungle track & boar hunting) afterward, thus my line of thinking tend to follow similar line.

The Chinese diesel heaters look OK, so I've ordered one tonight, should have it Thursday. Two deep cycle marine batteries will form the storage on the solar system, yes I could charge from the engine but the solar panels are free to run. Satellite phone for emergency use if no mobile/cell signal available.

Sorting through winter clothing kit, I've got a load including three down jackets and two down sleeping bags so ordered some Down Wash to give them a clean, load of Goretex gear, jackets/trousers/gaiters. Also got a US army sleep system which is very good and a Brit army Arctic bag which is good to -20c/-4f, more if combined with army 'softie' jacket/trousers or Buffalo jacket. Its surprising how much stuff you accumulate over time, but I do store things well so all good.

Mounted the heater on a sheet of plywood to raise it off wet ground and am looking at boxing it in leaving room to store the piping, I like things tidy.

Carpet ripped up going to re-floor using marine ply sheeting.

Extractor fan not working, motor worn out so need to source new one.

    Replaced gas hose to cooker

Ebayed pots/pans for van cooking and will get other bits and pieces locally.

Can't believe I could not source grommets locally, had to order off ebay. Hardware stores are a thing of the past here it seems.

Things moving on nicely. Tomorrow pitching and proofing tents in the garden if it don't piss down.

Do you cook inside or outside? If your cooking outside why not consider more portable stove, such as butane stove?

I'll make tea or coffee in the van but doubt I'll do any cooking in there, cooking smells linger. I've got a few cooking options from hill walking/winter camping/bushcraft, gas, coleman fuel and even got a wood burner for a tent but I've not used that since I lost interest in Bushcraft camping. Butane no good in cold weather so only use propane in the van and butane/propane mix in canister stoves. Do you get Trangia alcohol stoves in the states, I don't think they're popular but are simple and so long as you have alcohol there are not parts to fail. Here's a Trangia, I've got the multifuel insert too, not cheap but if its sub zero you need those extra BTU's

I doubt Trangia is popular in US, they do things very differently. They even drive on the wrong side of the road, which scared the heck out of me

Alcohol based stove is best when you need to cook or just warming up water in tightly confined space. And Trangia multifuel insert is very reliable. Might wanna add Trangia Triangle too.

I used to have Trangia Mini, Trangia 27, but all my stuff never last long, since my colleagues, friends keep asking me to sell it to them.

I've got a Triangle but didn't think much of it to be honest, I stick with the 27 usually even if I only take one pot with me. The multifuel works so well, I tend to use Optimus liquid fuel, same as Coleman fuel, burns clean and a mate bought me back a load of it when he drove home from Germany.

Since you use alcohol to warm up water inside, might as well stocking up 190 prof alcohol (moonshine) as well. Back when I was still have Trangia 27, I've always kept 1L of moonshine either as backup fuel or as mix with other liquor :D

Moonshine :) as it happens a mate from my army days makes pine needle vodka and its mighty powerful stuff

I use ethanol in the Trangia. A friend of my lad spent two summer seasons working a bar in Spain and said they used bio ethanol in the cocktails they sold.

Couple of nights in North Wales, private woodland I've permission to use, no facilities so perfect for the vans first run. If all performs well we'll head up to Scotland, max social distancing but I doubt we'll be getting close to other people where we're going.

I like her, good leader, don't piss about, pro EU so whats not to like. Initial plan is Isle of Skye, you can wild camp and I'd think we'll be OK if we tuck the van away down a track/minor road sort of thing. I did fancy the Lake district but way to much infection in the north of England so thats off the plan.

Had a Tesco home delivery booked for 12:00, had a phone call at 09:30 'can we drop off early' so people are going back into supermarkets again and not relying on home drops. Had a chat with the driver, she said there are empty slots every day of the week now and she expects to get laid off (temp contract for the emergency) then they'll phone when things go bad again.

not only a non prepper, a remainer too, that explains a lot!! just joking!!
she's a terrible leader, fixated on independence then wants to immediately give it up in subservience to the EUSSR. not that the EU wants Scotland anyway, still I reckon she will be out next election, Scots are fed up with her.
    good luck with both trips.
most people down here if they can get a food delivery slot are sticking with it.
we've got a meat delivery coming tomorrow.

Think you need to go take a look at the lady, her popularity has soared because of her EU support, the call for independence and the way she's handled the pandemic something Johnson and Trump can't claim. It will be a sad day when Scotland leaves the union :(

I see more and more pesky illegal immigrants are crossing the channel, you know, the ones 'they' said would stop when we voted to leave the EU LOL

I like home delivery, you can sit at your computer, take your time with your order, these days visits to shops are a rushed affair, nobody wants to hang around do they. Booze is expensive in Scotland so today's order included four bottles of single malt :)

we have several farm shops in the area plus a weekly market, supermarkets shopping-mostly cans- is done once every 3 weeks.
those immigrants in the channel are illegal and should be sent straight back, I couldnt emigrate to Canada without the proper paperwork so why should they? time to increase the border force and beef up the navy, forget paying the EU any money and spend it all at home.

Never stopped the immigrants before, not stopped them in the years since the Brexit vote. No law to say France has to take them back and now we're leaving why should France co-operate with the UK in creating an aggreement?...its not going to happen. Yet another brexit lie that was believed by the simple minded sheeple who could not see the truth then voted to leave and now we'll all be paying the price for these lies. Where is the £300+ million a week to the NHS that was promised? Another brexit lie.

France could very easily stop the migrants setting off but why should they, we ain't in the club anymore mate, they owe us nothing. The UK is on its own, just a small crowded lump of rock with too many people living on it and its world influence shrinking by the day, welcome the the 3rd world UK which is where we'll be in a decade or less.

Back to the campervan I've just ordered a small pressure cooker which will be here Wednesday :)

How you going to do that? Send in the gun boats? The Royal Navy is a joke, we build two world class carriers which we don't need and shrank the rest of the fleet, its a joke.

    1. TMT Tactical
Does not take much to stop a fishing boat! Don't need a destroyer or any other main line battle ship. Arm a few fast moving patrol boats and when enough fishing boats have been confiscated, France will become a lot more friendly in regards to illegal migrants leaving their shores..

In the Socialist news, we read that even the collectivists recognize that the European economy is crumbling. I hope that the Union prints enormous mountains of euro-paper if for no other reason than that it, in last resort, can be used as toilet paper; hope they print mountains of paper and debt tall enough to dwarf the Alps.

Its in trouble but not crumbling same as America. The USA is just another EU, an economic joining of States so I thought you'd approve of it. Think about it, the USA relies on interstate co-operation, at its fundamental level America is based on socialism :)

Why no firearms? Not hard to get shotguns and rifles in the UK, for a rifle have a clean criminal record, good mental health, join a rifle club, on probation for a while then you get a license, shotguns are easier to get. The UK ain't gun free mate. I might go for a firearms certificate, I used to be a good shot in the army and I like guns from the engineering point of view too...could be my new hobby for 2020, cheers Geezer :)

I stand corrected, one can buy repeating arms in the U.K. -- 30 rnd stick magazines, no problem. Pump shotguns with extended tube 9-shot -- no problem. Double-stack magazine, semi-automatic handguns -- no problem (got a chopped 9mm with dbl-stack mag in my pocket as I sit writing this).

If a British homeowner shoots a home-invader, not a problem.

In England, just ask Mommy and Daddy government for permission, and they'll let you pretend that you are a citizen and not the castrated serf that you are.

    Looters come in swarms.

Right, I've been reading up on UK gun laws and what you need to do to be licensed; its all very straight forward, talked to my brother who's a police officer and he pointed out a few things to me so I'll be looking at shooting as a new hobby.

Handguns are pretty much banned in the UK unless they are long barreled then they get lumped in with rifles so possible to own but too big for a concealed carry (which is quite rightly illegal in the UK). Police don't routinely carry firearms in the UK but there are armed response units all over the place (brothers a trained firearms officer). UK gun laws are strict but the benefits of this are reflected in the tiny amount of legal firearms used against people. The bad guys can always get weapons but I'm very happy with strict gun control, I'd hate any laws that allowed you to just buy a weapon and this is reflected in the USA by the amount of deaths caused by legally owned guns compared to countries with stricter gun control. There is no reason to own an assault rifle, hunting rifles yes, target rifles yes, assault rifles no, no excuse to own one. 2019 US police shot and killed almost 1000 people, UK police shot and killed 3.

Insufficient number of rounds. Children listen to their parents. Adults live their own lives. My youngest son rarely calls me; when he does, we talk logic. He is his own man. His life is his life. I have no say in his life. Why should I? Same with citizens. Serfs obey, serfs kneel.

When facing a machete wielding nut case, tell me how having your firearm locked away is going to help you. Dead criminals do not repeat their crimes, so I say good riddance to bad rubbish. In most of the USA, we don't have to need something, we can buy it simply because it is fun to have, no "mother May I" crap.

By the by, British overlords tried to rule us as if we were serfs, so we killed them. We killed their officers first. We killed colonists who followed the British overlords. They were worthless so we killed them. If we get a Leftist regime, the military, the police, and other citizens will not obey them. If the would-be gods make trouble, they will be killed.

This is what my kin living in the Southern Appalachian mountains did to those who would be serfs to the elitist British, Battle of Kings Mountain:

"... 2019 US police shot and killed almost 1000 people ..." I think that that is a pathetic number also. If only U.S. cops had killed ten times that, 100 times that, maybe then the number of people with a genetic predisposition to have zero self-control / zero frontal-lobe activity could start being brought down.

How about knife control? Do you believe that ground & sharpened pieces of metal should be banned?

Apparently Sweden needs to ban hand-grenades and machine-guns.

colonists- up to that point the only true Americans were the tribes that had lived there for thousands of years, everyone else was either an immigrant or the offspring of an immigrant.
I dont blame the Americans for wanting to be free but wasnt it mostly about "taxation without representation"?
dosent your declaration of independence say something about "bring me your huddled masses yearning to be free"???

IF you still in EU (which your not) you can apply for firearm license in Nederland, its the cheapest around EU and qualification is held routinely, in fact people from France and German went there to apply for license.

BTW do you even need anything other than shotgun anywhere in British Isle? Its not like you have any lethal size fauna there

in the UK shotguns are mostly used for vermin control or pheasant shooting, or in clay shooting clubs.

If a brit had written that I'd have smiled, put it down to typical brit dry/dark humour but sadly you actually mean it.

Just out of curiosity have you taken the Folstein test yet? Bet your score would be interesting to say the least :) At your advanced age its vital to keep your noggin active, if you don't you'll end up medicated, wearing a diaper and dribbling into your oatmeal and you don't want that. Computer games can help maintain your remaining cognitive levels according to scientists, so buy a Play Station and you get to kill thousands of people a day online AND keep your mind active its win win for you.

Well, I'm now set on the idea of getting my firearms certificate within 15 months. I've found a club that has access to an army range in South Wales including the 1km range, turns out you can legally own a .50 cal sniper rifle in the UK , I never knew that :) Drawing up my plan of action now and my son't keen on the idea too so a new shared hobby.

Weather here is great, 30c/85f yesterday, I tan really easily and look fantastic in my Wayfarers and shorts, who else here keeps toned up?

... Oh, question: Has your mother taken the Holstein test? Hope your mommy wasn't an utter failure.
