The rural folks here does the so called mountain farming aside from tending their farm. The mountain farm is usually kilometers away. Our former housemaid said that their mountain farm is 5 hours of walking away from their home farm. In those cases, what they normally do is to wait for the rains before planting crops like cassava and corn. They will leave that mountain farm to its own and devices and just come back in time for harvesting.

Only 2 of them will come back with a sack each. And when the harvest is good, they will come back some other day to harvest the rest of the produce. Their method proves that there are crops that would grow as long as there is irrigation. About the weeds, it is expected but the crop thrives with the weeds.
