Online reference sites are a good resource to gather information and skills about survival. There are two sites that would make my day with respect to crafting and modifying items for survival situations. One such site is Instructables and DIY which give step by step instructions on how to fashion a wide array of items which would be handy in the wild.

Yeah. But I suggest to always put in practice some things you find interesting and doable in order to see whether is effective or not. Of course, stuffs like setting traps or cutting off local trees are not a suitable idea to do for experiment purpose. But definitely you can gather water with moisture, test filters, light a bonfire if you have enough space for it,
and make your own primitive tools following instructions.
