Airborne Forces, most notable in Portugal and South American countries have a distinctive way of lacing boots. Not only for traditions but to increase ankle support during a parachute jump. Only paratroopers wear them with surplus green paracord istead of the usual black string. On parade, they are usually worn with white paracord.

It does look a good way to prevent ankle injuries though

This type of lacing mat indeed increase ankle support. Also it appears that the length of cord is increased by a fair amount. Its no secret that cordage is a high priority survival item. The nature of a paratroopers mission makes susrvival skills very important. This method of lacing can afford the use of the valuable cord & still have enough left over for the boots.
