Decades ago, people in my region used to preserve fire by burying or covering burning embers in woodash in their hearths. I don't know the science behind it but overnight, the glow continued and a fresh fire could be kindled in the morning.

It is called banking the fire. This method is still in use today.

we had coal and log open fires when I was a kid, even 20 years ago we used this method, found the sheep dog puppy sleeping in the ash and embers one morning, don't know how it didn't get burned alive-the embers were still red.

We had a dog did the same thing. We used to do all our washing in a copper outside. The dog got in close after we had finished the washing & burnt some of the hairs on her back!
