Decades ago, people in my region used to preserve fire by burying or covering burning embers in woodash in their hearths. I don't know the science behind it but overnight, the glow continued and a fresh fire could be kindled in the morning.

I've woken up to campfires still having embers the morning after it was lit, so this can definitely happen, especially with hardwood fires. Maybe the ash prevents the embers from burning too quickly?
