We are looking at building a ram pump to move water from a spring up a hill . Anybody got any experience on such a set up ?

I've never had one but if I lived in an area with a stream I certainly would. I watched a lot of YT at one point about them and never a single complaint about them. Keep us up to date on your progress and a range report on your results.

I've also read up on them but can't help but wonder how much of a hill they can push water up. I would think you are fairly limited.

This brings to mind some stuff from college I worked on with pumps drawing water up from a well. There is a formula that dictates the amount of height water can be drawn due to atmospheric pressure and the density of the water. If I recall correctly the height gain was quite small without specialist kit. When I say small I seem to remember it being in the region of twenty feet, but you will have to do a bit of research to check that, as it was a lot of years back I did the study.

I don't know if a ram pump would make it with just a continuous incline but maybe with a climb, then decline (elevation drop to aid suction) then a climb again. Just a thought, passing trough my mind.

I saw where the force of water falling to enter the pump would give it the power to pump up hill . With a mining type sluth I could create as high a water drop as I wanted . One formula is for every foot of drop it supposedly will pump up hill thirty feet . Actually though I think that formula might be a bit optimistic .

Today we have moved from installing solar panels on my son's house here on our retreat " waiting on some fancy wires " to building a ram pump . With good luck may have the ram pump working by dark .
