Greetings from Potchefstroom, South Africa. I am Mekada and I look forward to learning more about preparation and survival from like minded people. I am sort of an all rounder when it comes to skills. Not particularly great at anything but I do have decent technical and general abilities.

Hi New to the forum from and living in ireland
I don't call myself a prepper which might sound odd on a site like this but I understand the dangers of the dependency on technology and greed of governments and the chaos that will happen when they fail and they will

My love of survival comes from working in adventure centers for 6 years training and teaching kayaking hill walking camping/basic survival .I then worked in private security for 3 years (where I learned that people will do anything if desperate enough) and hav bin doing Viking reenactment (combat and living history) for the past 8 years and in the process of moving off grid looking forward to learning more from like minded people

The Vikings were truly resourceful! I can second that. Desperate people make for highly dangerous situations. Welcome aboard!

people will only be desperate for a short period, then they wont be around any more. have enough supplies for a "hunker down" period and you will outlive them all!
remember humans can only live for 3 weeks without any food, and 3-5 days without water.
in a lot of places, disease will kill a lot more people than violence ever will. just look at Haiti now for an example, cholera is rife there after the storm .

Very true. But I feel that people are tenacious. In Zimbabwe when the economy collapsed and the food and resources ran out, people started eating the birds and straggling animals. Then when things got worse they ate their pets. (the reports of cannibalism that I have heard of I can neither confirm or deny) They import vast amounts of consumer goods and electronic devices from South Africa. Diseases and the lack of medication does kill many but not nearly as much as you would think. Mainneprepper once said that even if 99% of the American populace died the surviving 1 would equate to more than 3 million people. That is still a colossal amount of mouths to feed.

I don't now where MainePrepper got his figures from, but I read somewhere that if 95-97% of the population perished that would leave about 6 million humans on the entire planet.

1% of seven billion is still 70 million world wide.
So UK is about 65 million 1% equals is about 650,000 ! 3-5% survival equates to approx. 2-3.5 million
Australia is 24 million so I recon on 5-10% survival that equates to 1.2 - 2.4 million
USA is about 350 million including illegals! one percent is still 3.5 million!

That is a lot of people contending for ever shrinking resources. Manufacturing will mostly be gone. Even if all the machines and equipment remain the skilled labor will be dead or gone. No more ammunition, bateries, clothing, weapons. This will knock us back hundreds of years as we don't remember the skills our grandparents used to work around the shortages. We dont know how to mine or refine resources and mould them to our needs. The long and the short of it is we are going to be screwed.

correction.......most people will be screwed ! if you can live a more simpler and basic lifestyle without the need for technology, somewhat similar to the Amish, then you will have a chance of surviving. like I said before all those millions of people who cannot, or will not, cope without the myriad of modern life will not survive, mainly because they don't know how to.

NO you are only screwed if you give up!
There are still books to learn from!
A friend made from basicly junk a bullet machine! it turned lead and used .22LR cases into jacketed .223R projectiles
Cost him about $60 all up, treadle powered and a small wood stove for pre-heating!
He has about 30 tons of lead stored and so far half a 44gal drum of used cases! he cranks it up once a year to make a few thousand projectiles for himself at present
but post event he could be a very busy boy!

I stand corrected. Most people. Yes the Amish are simplistic but I don't posses their skills (i have built a few aircraft and an even a racing car not too long ago. I can work a laith a milling machine and work with hydraulic and pneumatic equipment... But i cant make iron, simply shape it.) and even among them their masters craftsman are gone. They don't mine or build guns. They procure these and similar items from modern society.

its not so much the current generation, they will be enough stuff left lying around post event to see us out, its the ones that come after that will suffer, they are the ones that will have to be taught how to survive with little or none.

    About right there!
The level to tech a community can sustain is dependant on its numbers and food production!
A well fed community can afford to have non farming specialists, the more efficient the food production the more specialists and the higher tech available!

How far communities regress will vary!
Childrens schooling will seem worthless short term but will actually be critical in the long term! Reading, writing, maths, science, physics all will be needed more than ever!

Hi, I go by Onion John my US Navy nickname. as I am in my 60's I am old school, learned a lot of the old skills from my father & grandfather. Have been prepping for years mostly due to the threat of a major earthquake in our area, have enough for the family down to the grand children. Hope I never need it but we are ready if it happens.

Hello Jim here, living on Vancouver Island. I trained over 12 years JKD, Kalli (A lot of stick, knife and improvised weapons) all reality based. Curently getting my lvl 3 occopational first aid( for use outside of 20 minutes ambulance, land or air.) I am working towards off grid living. I have needed to use both training both life threatening, I will say that both skills are priceless even if you use them one time.starting to build using scavanged material, alaskan saw mill and as little store baught materials as possible.

I'm am former army. been so long I have forgotten a lot I am trying to get back into shape so if something does happen I can take care of my family and need to learn and re-learn a lother of things. There is no doubt that all of this is a perishable skill. I am living proof of that.
