Thanks, Elkhound. This will save me a lot of time and aggravation when splitting a lot of material by hand.

I saw in the video in the last post, that in order for the splitter to work, you must first create the split with a knife or fingernails to get the split started, then push the wooden splitter down the pre-cuts.

OK, "monkey see, monkey do" I will have to make one too!

As handy as this gizmo seems to be, I was surprised to learn that it was a relatively recent invention in the early 1800s.

What I would really like to do, is to be able to make a splitter for splitting softer material, such as for cordage rather than the stiffer stuff for baskets.

that's pretty neat but I wonder how to control runout, when splitting by hand the thicker side can be bent back into line and that will keep it uniform.

I noticed those while I was meandering around that site earlier. Maybe the one in the middle might save a bit of time...put it on my wish list!

Look how pretty this is! I found this at the same site: https://thestrawshop.com/product/antique-threads/

100+ year old threads made from rye straw, wow!

Nice tool. I split willow using a knife which is slow, but it works. The tool would be nice, but I doubt there would be a place for it in my INCH pack. Maybe when/if I settle in one spot.
