Hoard certainly does give it a negative connotation, doesn't it?

Being prepared for the worst however does pay off. However since you can't stock pile everything I suppose there are some supplies which a survivalist must have with them just in case . . .

What are some of the most essential supplies a prepper should stock pile?

Well it always depends on what situation you're prepping for.
What applies in every scenario is first aid. You should always have a fully stocked first aid kit, and mind to add some things that people don't sell with the set, like a set of sterilised stitches, or basic antibiotics, painkillers and anti-inflammatory meds, these won't take up much space anyway. Don't worry if you don't know how to stich a person, someone else might know instead, and if puch comes to shove it's not even that hard to do it yourself.
If you live far away from organised hospital care, or far from urban settings in general, it's handy to also keep a mini-defibrillator around. Those can be as cheap as 200$ and come with instructions.
All in all I think it's good to take an emergency aid - first aid - basic life support class to really understand what you need and what is redundant in stocking.

Food, water, and first aid items are the best. Food should be canned or freeze dried mostly so that it can be stores for a long time. Glass containers are also good to keep; you can store water in these and it's much safer long term than plastic.

    Stockpile skills!
I spent an entire week on a Austere and Wilderness medical course $4,000 worth ( got a bulk forum discount)

Best time and money ever spent! Not a doctor by any shot but know and can do the basics with a fair chance of success!
