Surviving a flash flood is not an easy task to accomplish. As you will only have moments to react. The best way that you can survive a flash flood is to try to keep yourself out of zones or flash flood advisories occur. Be aware if an area that you are camping, hiking or backpacking in is prone to flash floods. When they say flash floods, this can happen at any time and in a moment's notice. Typically areas that have mountains surrounding them are the ones that are most prone to flash floods. Heavy rains can cause water to rise extremely fast. This rushing water often carries debris, and the white waters make it extremely hard to float and swim. Even a boat during a flash flood is at risk of tipping over and not a sure-fire form of safety. A group of Boy Scouts ended up losing their lives on Whites Creek in Rhea County Tennessee back in the 1960s. A flash flood came rushing up on them while they were on a canoe outing. Even though these were trained Boy Scouts wearing the proper safety equipment and they knew how to operate their canoes the rushing water was too much and took the lives of all of the Boy Scouts and 2 Scout leaders that day. The only way to truly survive flash flooding is to know how to avoid being caught in zones where flash flooding occurs. Nobody wants to end up like they did at the end of the movie oh brother where art thou.
