    Good morning all,

    Per ...

    It's nearly impossible for a private citizen to explain what goes on within the swamp but there are some perfect examples presented by the Senator;

    "...one of my first hearings with ... Obama's Defense Secretary Ash Carter, ... the DOD Arctic strategy .. It was 13 pages, six of which were pictures. Climate change was mentioned like six times, and Russia was mentioned once in a footnote. China wasn't even mentioned."

    "strategic Arctic port idea ... Right now closest is Anchorage or Dutch Harbor, 1,600 nautical miles away. That's like Fort Lauderdale covering Boston."

    Note term in picture caption "ice liberty".

    Note the 20 empty missile silos at Fort Greeley.

    ..........

    Please understand why I say to not blame external elements for our nation's problems. ~ 90% is internal to the US.

    Good morning Varuna,

    The Arctic region has a few countries with their territory in this region.

    The Northwest Passage is considered a Canadian inland waterway by Ottawa. The US considers it an international waterway. There are international implications to this. For example, Indonesia uses a political geographic theme like Canada's. A foreign flag vessel cannot just sail from eg Darwin, Australia using "innocent passage" doctrine to travel in waters of Indonesia enroute to Manila, Philippines. I'm writing all this from memory so not sure of changes.

    Besides territory, some nations claim "interests" in the Arctic, eg Singapore, China.

    Nothing is simple. Some treaty blocs are involved. Dale mentioned NORAD. A couple more: EU (via EU member Denmark's Greenland), SCO (Arctic power Russia has trade, defense, economic development programs with China).

    We must dress warm.
