Hope Dorian heads towards Florida, stops, backs off, heads back out to sea traveling northeast, strengthens to 5, to cat 6, to 7, and beyond. Off Maryland, Dorian becomes indescribable in ferocity and in width (hundreds of miles wide) and heads further out to sea. I hope the urbanites move back into their apartments in the cities, throw parties, and flip the storm the bird. I then hope that Dorian stops then heads due west at a horrendous velocity and levels everything from D.C. to Boston. I would that the Earth be scraped to its surface and all the debris and tens of millions of human bodies be swept out to sea.

It is well past time for there to be the "wailing and gnashing of teeth."

So far, in recent history, the Bahamas had money to rebuild.

A cruise ship company owns one of the islands. The USN has a submarine test range there. There are many rich citizens and visitors. They'll come through this hurricane also.

 

We all saw how the people reacted when hurricane SANDY hit the east coast . All that whining and a crying and Sandy was just a cat 3 . They may get a chance to see what a real hurricane looks like this time .

 

Well, I think the reports of gas shortages are overblown. Out of curiosity, I drove around Orlando this morning and did not see a single gas station that was out of fuel or even any with long lines.

 

It has come time in this country to proceed with a mass-divorce.

Conservative / Libertarian / Constitution-loving states need to be established. Anti-Constitution, pro-European-Socialist states need to be established. The left-coast Pacific states could form a leftist union. New England could also form a leftist union. Heartland America could stay the same -- i.e. continue to be a union of states organized by the Constitution. Only the top part of Florida, panhandle, only those areas are still part of America. The bottom half of Florida is a Hispanic territory (Florida will inevitably return to being underneath the Atlantic, so might as well get'er'done right now).

If not living there already: Patriotic Americans should move to Heartland America. Leftist secular-humanist people should move to one of the Amerikas or Europe (which would be a much better choice). The hordes of refugees should head for one of the Amerikas. Heartland America, would of course take in the military services. Leftists only care about the military when the men and women therein are doing something for them. Leftists never want the military to do military things unless it is the destruction of anything right-wing.

If Commie Cuba could be cleansed, the true / patriotic Cubans living in America could return home. They do love their island country, after all.

This is one of those urban myths like the Idea that Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. It MISSED and went in somewhere East of New Orleans. They were flooded from the NORTH by water from a lake north of the city that was held back by insufficient and poorly designed and maintained levees that were protecting places that were deathtrap holes 12 or more feet below sea level.

What happens is that we tend to want to upgrade a storm's power and destructiveness to account for the damage that was mostly a result of human stupidity and lack of proper preparations. Where I come from we used to go fishing when a Cat 1 was coming in and then run just ahead of it to get out of low land. A cat 1 or tropical storm was mostly a fun reason to not go to school when I was a kid. I was raised in a place that seemed to get hit every few years. We tend to remember things as they relate to which hurricane was near it. My Daughter was born when Hurricane Allen was coming in on us. I had gone fishing and crabbing the day before.

Hurricane Sandy was bad because people had built on sandbars. The weather service refused to issue Hurricane warnings because it was too late in the season so it COULDN'T be a hurricane. SO STUPID!!!!! Anytime a place goes decades between getting hit it is going to be ugly. The people there have no idea what is coming and don't understand that it is serious. The trees have grown tall and old and are just waiting for the next storm to fall over. Mostly, people just get stupid. If it has not happened in 10 years then it can't happen and the stuff that you hear is probably just stories and not true...So they sit there and get drowned...

 

Dorian is now a Cat4!!! It could make cat 5 before it goes in. When a cat 4 or 5 is coming at you, YOU RUN!! a cat 5 hurricane is actually the same as an F-3 tornado as far as wind speed. The thing is that it just keeps on coming where a tornado slams in and then moves on. It is like comparing an unusually high tide to a tsunami!! Only a suicidal fool would sit on his porch and let a tornado come to him. A hurricane with that wind speed is a LOT worse.

 

My oldest daughter left Jacksonville this AM. She lives in a mandatory evacuation zone. By the radar, I'm glad she is coming home.

How long depends upon how wide it is, and how fast it is traveling. Most hurricanes usually crawl over land at around ten miles an hour or less. Sometimes the suckers stall.

At the moment, hurricane-force winds are extending up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center of Dorian, and tropical storm-force winds up to 105 miles (165 km) from the center. Of course, it may grow...or not. Too far out at sea to tell what size or strength it will be at the moment of impact on land.

I have seen cars that had their paints totally pealed off and the metal pitted like a golf ball all over by a cat 3. A local TV station decided to go to Galveston to ride it out. The car was parked in front of the hotel on the sea wall. in the parking lot. It came home on a trailer.

 

I've weathered 2 hurricanes (1 in Hawaii and 1 in North Carolina). Not something I want either of my kids to be able to say. The one in Hawaii, I was in the Army and we did guard duty. Had a concrete wall to stand behind and wore flak vest to guard the warehouse area. It was interesting huddling against that wall and watching the buildings blow apart. We had a hurricane party at the barracks. We would throw the empty bottles from the lanai and as soon as they hit the wind stream, they vanished. Young and dumb.

Hurricane winds are like standing on an empty Interstate highway and a half mile away a Boeing 747 fires up the 4 jet engines.

Think of sand paper rubbed on face.

Now for the bad news, ... after the winds, the flood waters are disease infected. Think of the last time you were so sick you were in bed for too long. Prevent a repeat event.

 

Heck, I ride out cat twos in my van with little concern. I do look for a wind break to hide the van behind for cat 2; for cat 1 I don't even bother. I do stay away from trees and light/telephone poles when I park though.

A Cat 5 hurricane has a power that is almost inconceivable. It can literally peel a road up off the ground and blow it away. NO standard home can survive that. All that would be left is the slab if it was on a slab. Right now Dorian is the second strongest storm on record. Allan in 1980 hit 190 MPH sustained winds. A cat 4 can have gusts over 225 mph. that sort of breeze can blow tractor-trailer rigs away like a feather in the wind.

 

I just hope that the high that is keeping it out of the Gulf of Mexico holds up, and that Dorian goes EAST to be a monster fishstorm.

If that thing gets in the superhot waters of the Gulf, it will definitely turn into THE most powerful storm ever recorded. Remember Katrina was a puny Cat ONE when she crossed into the hot waters of the Gulf from Florida, then instantly turned stupid.
