Time, Social distancing…why and what it may mean

Time…To a certain extent, time is sort of an opinion that is based on what you are perceiving. When there is very little going on your perception of time is that it is crawling along and then when a lot of things are happening, and you are busy, it seems to fly by. It most often seems that our perception of time is more a measure of the time between memorable and different experiences than the actual passing of time.

Boredom is simply a lack of memorable things that will break a stretch of time into pieces. Most people don’t deal well with this. When you are deprived of stimulus you become prone to daydreaming to offer your conscious mind something to deal with.

It is strange the long boring periods of time seem to pass so slowly BUT when you look back it seems so short because there was nothing in that period to break it up into memorable pieces and it becomes one small memory. If people are forced into confinement and isolation they will retreat into their minds and eventually that can become their reality. That is called being CRAZY!!

Something that people don’t understand now days is that “modern” people don’t have the training or tools to deal with even limited isolation. Most people born after the 70s have lived with constant artificial stimulation. For some, it is a 24 hour a day thing with radios, TVs, Computers, and all the various personal music players.

People these days don’t talk much, they don’t think a lot in the sense of just sit and ponder and think about things. Even when they are together they each clutch their cell phones and seem to mostly try to ignore each other. When they get bored with their machines they then gather and make noise just to make each moment memorable and to avoid the horror of boredom and introspection.

This stay at home social distancing is going to drive these people crazy and I expect increasing violence. ANYTHING is better than boredom and they will seek out and cause violence if that is all that they can do. Time is beginning to lose its meaning for many of us. LOL, if it wasn’t for my watch I wouldn’t know what day of the week it is most of the time. Each day is much the same and that makes it hard to keep track of time.

I am probably better off than most because I was more or less an only child. My only sibling was a younger brother. H was profoundly retarded and never passed the level of about an 18-month-old baby. I spent a lot of time alone and often lived very much in myself. I have dozens of craft type hobbies to the point that my wife says that my hobby is hobbies and I like to learn new things. I also have always escaped into books and prefer them over movies or TV.

I am doing fine but I am seeing that others are beginning to suffer. For many, there is the worry about money and getting the bills paid. For some, it is the sheer horror of being locked up in the house with a bunch of bored kids. In the end, we need to determine just how bad the COVID-19 is and how bad is this isolation going to affect our culture and nations. Are we going to sit on our butts afraid to face this illness only to end up allowing our system to collapse creating a much greater level of death and destruction?

Places like this are keeping a lot of people going. Living alone in normal times is a struggle but with this current situation, it is a living hell for some. My wife is active on several local groups and has run errands for several people that had limited mobility issues before this and have been separated from most of their support system. We are also trying to put the money that we are getting from the FEDS and unemployment back into the local businesses. She is active on Facebook and such while I am more active on various boards. what are you doing to keep your mind active and to break the monotony?

    Good morning TexDanm,

Great essay; We Americans no longer deal with the intangibles like isolation, contemplation of the human body's ultimate fate. Modern America is not ready for this. Only basic skill is recharging devices.

America's modern people - present also in Hong Kong, much of western Europe - have little to no experience with isolation and it's mental aspects. Their artificial stimulus is external; the music machines, the info gadgets, the human contacts via distance. What aspects of death have NOT been removed from the scene ? Clinical environments of sanitized cleanliness are the new norm. It's all so artificial. They cannot cope.

    In reply to question;

Since the quarantine, my mind has been kept active by hurricane preparations. Initial stages of the prep was mental imagining - thinking of what trees might not remain vertical and disturbing the snake dwelling, visualizing where my 1 km dirt road will have trees for speed bumps,... Spent time on clothing and equipment maintenance.

When leaving my shack for a weekly/every 10 days outing to grocery store, it's less about buying some stuff not really needed but to observe how this area's "Middle America" is reacting to the quarantine. About half in line waiting for store to open are wearing DIY masks, a couple also with gloves. It's the "Thy rod and staff they comfort me" thinking they have PERSONAL control over their destiny with some cloth on face. This psychological denial will get busted soon enough.

The above link tells of a NYC news example given the public saying that 66% of COVID hospital admissions were from people sheltering at home. Social distancing was not relevant to their infections. Whether true or not, news media is the premier tool for opinion molding.

For the US, this quarantine has us witnessing the beginning of:
    - the breaking up of the health care cartels and monopolies
    - public schools (colleges/universities also) transitioning to distance learning via IT.
    - the military thinning out; old systems eg aircraft carriers leaving, drone platforms arriving
    - political subdivisions like small cities, fiefdom counties fading away.
    - replacement Federal organizations replacing the self-promoting, entrenched bureaucracies. Space Force is a new example. FBI might be getting smaller. Other big cost agencies like the housing mortgage ones and the education bureaucracy leaving the scene.
    - the private citizen motor vehicle - might - get drastically expensive for ownership by the middle class.
    - young women will be in the new military draft for public work projects like clean rivers, clean streets.

Those who are prepared via knowledge will help run the newly reformatted country.

    The party's over.

    MAGA

I grew up as an only child and spent long periods on my own both as a child and later as an adult, so being alone and being in isolation from others is nothing new to me, social distancing is my permanent life style not just something for now.

the thing with humans for the most part are "social animals" and being apart from others seems to do their heads in, also they are reliant on all manner of technology so once the world becomes dark and quiet they WILL freak out. anyone who freaks out post SHTF will make mistakes and mistakes will cause accidents and accidents will kill people.

I agree Lonewolf, people on the whole are social animals/tribal and its that works most of the time but when you take people out of there comfort zone they don't know their arse from their elbow; they've lost control sort of thing.

Talking to my brother the copper about 'tough guys' and he said take them out of their comfort zone, strip them, put them in overalls and the tough bullshit starts to melt away.

Plenty of things to do IF you can be bothered to look.

Here you go Lonewolf, the Open University are offering short courses in a lot of different areas, only short but fun https://www.open.edu/openlearn/free-courses/full-catalogue I'm brushing up on my German, my French will be next :)

Never monotony for those who live the lifestyle that I live. Little as changed for me, it is just more of same, same, same early nineteen hundreds period lifestyle.

It is springtime in Alaska.........and only one thing matters, the "nagging" need to get ready for next winter. Just like all the other animals. Those who live in Alaska cities can enjoy the summer, while assuming their next winters needs will be available at some retailer. For me it all needs to be fully in inventory here by third week of next October. Everything.....food, clothing, shelter, security. And it needs to here in double redundancy.

In rural or bush Alaska........it is always about winter. Either the six months getting ready to survive the coming winter. Or the six months surviving till spring. If there really is a semi-clear period to relax........it exists from late October till early November. Winter is like war, either getting ready for war, or engaged in war.

once you take modern people out of their 21st century technological lifestyle and put them into a situation where they have to think for themselves without any outside assistance then they are lost.

that was your choice, to live where you do and to live like you do.
I doubt very many people could or would want to survive in a 6 months long harsh winter, I know I wouldn't.

was not inferring you were complaining , just that most people could not live the way you do or where you do.
that's why I live in the mild south west of the UK and not somewhere like the Highlands of Scotland .

I honestly haven't really changed much because of the current situation. If anything I miss being able to go to the sea shore. But in terms of keeping busy, I seem to have a million tasks and plans on the homestead to accomplish. And when one is complete I seem to find five more taking its place. So I am lucky in that boredom and monotony are not a problem for me. There is always something to build, fix, plant, feed etc etc. And I really don't like people anyway so going weeks without seeing anyone is fine by me.

It seems that in Santa Anna (within Los Angeles metro cancer), criminals are wearing masks. How respectful of them! Stabbing victims would be a violation of social distancing, so these thoughtful people are using guns. Remember violent felons have the same morals and intelligence as us. The only reason they turn to crime is due to their having been oppressed.
