I was now recovered from my surprise, and began to look round me, when

You will note the term "Tinderbox" used in this instance to describe the means of making fire.


Old flintlock pistols no longer in use were sometimes turned into tinderlighters, & of course you can use any flintlock gun to make fire in the same manner.

One of my favourites too, & although it is basically fiction, though based on Alexander Selkirk's exploits, the fact is it was still written in the period so the information on the fire lock is still valid.
