As a prepper personality type, I'm not living on the coast of any ocean. However, there are those who must do so due to their career mandating such. OK, so one is stuck living near an ocean -- which are known to slosh and kill tens, even hundreds, of thousands (Indonesia, for example). What to do? I found a couple of articles on the building of structures that may just save one from a tsunami.

To find shelter for an incoming tsunami, one must have prior notice; and quite frankly, that notice would be best to have hours before the arrival of the death wave. For Americans living in the Pacific Northwest, should the Cascadia Subduction Zone give way, the resultant tidal wave will hit with very short notice. That potential 9.0+ earthquake will generate MONSTER tidal waves. If you are anywhere near the shoreline, you'd better be right with your Creator, for you will not survive.

I'll never be able to afford a tsunami-protectant structure neither can anyone else ... unless they are filthy rich. What to do? Me, I'd find buildings that match those structures recommended by the engineers who have studied this matter. Here's something else one can do: Study which buildings survived the tsunamis that crashed into Indonesia and Japan here in recent history.

La Palma Island in the Canaries is currently experiencing a massive volcano that is showing no signs of settling down. A landslide on this island (happening after the volcanic activity is over; not during, unless the mountain blows) could send a massive tidal wave towards surrounding countries and continents. The tidal wave would take >six hours to hit Caribbean islands and the eastern shore of the U.S.. Given this amount of time, one could attempt to betake themselves to those buildings that would likely survive. La Palma is unlikely to come apart. Even if it did, the likely mass sliding into the ocean would not create a monster tsunami -- in the future it will, but that could be thousands of years from now. A space rock splashing into the ocean, now there's something that happens to our planet all the time.

First structure that comes to my mind is a multi-story parking garage. They are made of reinforced concrete and are redundantly strong due to their having to support the weight of hundreds and hundreds of cars. These structures must also survive any resonant frequency buildup should car movements synchronize -- bridges have come down not due to excessive weight, but due to the creation of a "perfect storm" resonant frequency buildup of forces.

Most folk will panic and attempt to get out of the city. Quite frankly, most people will not believe the reports and go back to bed / change the channel on their TV. Due to traffic jams, getting out of town could take days, not hours, to clear (think bulldozers), your likelihood of getting out of town with short notice is slim to none. Finding parking garages and massive reinforced concrete structures, that's doable.

Here's the articles I found for you folk who find themselves living near the coast:

"Earthquake Swarm Hits Off Oregon Coast, Causing Fears Of 'The Next Big One'"

    https://www.zerohedge.com/weather/earthquake-swarm-hits-oregon-coast-causing-fears-next-big-one

"The Blanco Transform Fault Zone (BTFZ) off Oregon's coast, one of North America's most active fault lines, generated 50 earthquakes in the last 24 hours.

"The quake swarm hit 200-250 miles west of Newport, Oregon, and ranged between magnitude 3.5 to 5.8. The area's seismic activity has generated a lot of buzz on social media, of worried people believing the next big one could be nearing.

"Meanwhile, the Oregon Office of Emergency has warned if a powerful 9.0+ magnitude earthquake originates from the Cascadia Subduction Zone, it could unleash a 'tsunami of up to 100 feet in height that will impact the coastal area.'

"The state agency adds, 'Currently, scientists are predicting that there is about a 37 percent chance that a megathrust earthquake of 7.1+ magnitude in this fault zone will occur in the next 50 years.'

"Professor of Marine Geology Dr. Chris Goldfinger at Oregon State University has focused research on the Cascadia Subduction Zone. He warned at a 2016 TED Conference, an earthquake for the area is 'overdue.'"

Another "Hello!" message from the Pacific Ring of Fire:

"Volcano erupts in Pacific, islanders rush to escape tsunami"

    https://www.stripes.com/theaters/as...ano-erupts-pacific-tonga-tsunami-4300247.html

"WELLINGTON, New Zealand — An undersea volcano erupted in spectacular fashion near the Pacific nation of Tonga on Saturday, sending large tsunami waves crashing across the shore and people rushing to higher ground.

"There were no immediate reports of injuries or the extent of the damage as communications with the small nation remained problematic. Video posted to social media showed large waves washing ashore in coastal areas, swirling around homes and buildings.

"The explosion of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai volcano was the latest in a series of spectacular eruptions.

"A Twitter user identified as Dr. Faka'iloatonga Taumoefolau posted video showing waves crashing ashore.

"'Can literally hear the volcano eruption, sounds pretty violent,' he wrote, adding in a later post: 'Raining ash and tiny pebbles, darkness blanketing the sky.'

"Earlier, the Matangi Tonga news site reported that scientists observed massive explosions, thunder and lightning near the volcano after it started erupting early Friday. Satellite images showed a 3 mile-wide plume rising into the air to about 12 miles."

it said on the news that Tonga phones and internet connections are all down, they are in a communications blackout, so anyone there is going to have to be self reliant at least until any outside relief effort can get in.

    Yep.

Tonga's communications lines, to include internet, were provided by undersea cables. This volcano was an undersea explosion of whopper dimensions -- seen from outer space. The earth displacement tore those cables like tiny cotton strings.

Those with shortwave capabilities can go on speaking with the outside world should they wish to do so. Those radio operators who have lost power, I hope they have generators. Not much news is coming out of there. I'd imagine that everybody there is out helping the folk who had damage to their property & boats. A bunch of ash has fallen on Tonga and the other islands around there. One's first thoughts are to help others during natural disasters such as this -- later on, one can get on the radio and send/receive information.

News article says that boats have been washed ashore. I pray that their fishing boats are not damaged or can be readily repaired. I've always considered Polynesian people tough and self-reliant. I wish them well through all this. They certainly did NOT deserve this sort of nasty circumstance. So far, no deaths have been reported and I pray that it stays that way.

I'd have preferred reading that Boston or NY, NY had had this explosion happen to them ... not innocent people.

"Pacific volcano: Ash-covered Tonga is like a moonscape say residents"

    https://news.yahoo.com/pacific-volcano-ash-covered-tonga-135940956.html

"A massive volcanic eruption in Tonga that triggered tsunami waves has smothered the Pacific islands in ash, cut power and severed communications.

"Up to 80,000 people there could be affected, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) told the BBC.

"New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the tsunami had wreaked "significant damage", washing boats ashore and battering beachside shops.

"No deaths have been reported so far.

"Information remains scarce, however, and New Zealand and Australia are sending surveillance flights to assess the extent of the damage."

Dang, dang, dang! Gosh how I hate that these good people are having to suffer through all this. Hopefully as they build back, they will come up with ideas as to how to handle tidal waves and the sequelae therefrom.

"Tsunami-Hit Tonga Faces Weeks Of No Communication"

    https://www.zerohedge.com/weather/significant-damage-reported-tonga-after-massive-volcano

All article quotes are in color Blue:

Tonga's capital, Nuku'alofa, suffered "significant damage," according to New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. She said a full assessment of the situation has yet to be conducted because all communication lines are down.

"The tsunami has had a significant impact on the foreshore on the northern side of Nuku'alofa with boats and large boulders washed ashore," Ardern said after contact with the New Zealand embassy in Tonga.

Ardern said the island is in desperate need of aid, such as food and water supplies, as "the ash cloud has caused contamination."

As of Monday morning, the full extent of the deaths and property damage is unknown. A linger ash cloud has made it hard for satellites to observe the island. Australia and New Zealand have deployed surveillance flights today.

For Tongans living overseas, the last two days have been absolutely brutal without communication channels to speak with family and friends. There are reports from the Pacific correspondent for Television New Zealand, Barbara Dreaver, that it would take two weeks before "international phones and internet are working again."

    Here's some more information:

    https://thenyledger.com/news/tonga-left-largely-cut-off-after-volcanic-eruption-tsunami/

This article is a good read. It gave me more info that the MSM is covering. In the following article quote, we read that there was heard a deafening explosion, then came the damaging tsunami and ash. I believe that many Americans are going to experience these same phenomena.

Residents of Tongatapu—home to most of Tonga’s people as well as the Tongan monarchy’s waterfront palace, embassies and resorts—recounted a deafening sound from the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano about 43 miles to its north. Soon the sky darkened, heralding the ash that would blanket the archipelago. Not long after, tsunami waves started to crash ashore, carrying away vehicles and inundating seafront properties, videos showed.

“It really popped our eardrums and everyone froze,” said Nightingale Filihia in a video posted to Facebook before Tonga’s internet connection with the world was severed. “Everyone froze in town and we were like—what the heck is that and then it just went pitch black,” she said.

The video recorded at a family home near Tonga’s capital, Nuku’alofa, showed visibility reduced by ash fall, and cars moving slowly down a nearby road as people moved further inland.

When Mt. Rainier goes, it's gonna wash-away a whole lot of people.

    https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/how-dangerous-mount-rainier

Although Mount Rainier has not produced a significant eruption in the past 500 years, it is potentially the most dangerous volcano in the Cascade Range because of its great height, frequent earthquakes, active hydrothermal system, and extensive glacier mantle.

Mount Rainier has 26 glaciers containing more than five times as much snow and ice as all the other Cascade volcanoes combined. If only a small part of this ice were melted by volcanic activity, it would yield enough water to trigger enormous lahars (debris flows and mudflows that originate on a volcano). Mount Rainier's potential for generating destructive mudflows is enhanced by its great height above surrounding valleys.

What is the greatest hazard presented by Mount Rainier?

Debris flows (lahars) pose the greatest hazard to people near Mount Rainier. A debris flow is a mixture of mud and rock debris that looks and behaves like flowing concrete. Giant debris flows sometimes develop when large masses of weak, water-saturated rock slide from the volcano's flanks. Many of these debris flows cannot be predicted and may even occur independently of a volcanic eruption.

Giant debris flows can also form during an eruption as hot rock fragments tumble down the volcano's slopes, eroding and melting snow and glacier ice. Although they happen infrequently, giant debris flows have the potential to inundate much of the southern Puget Sound lowland. Scientists estimate that debris flows can travel the distance between Mount Rainier and the Puget Sound lowland in as little as 30 minutes to a few hours. About 100,000 people now live in areas that have been buried by debris flows during the past few thousand years.

During the past 10,000 years, about 60 giant debris flows from Mount Rainier have filled river valleys to a depth of hundreds of feet near the volcano, and have buried the land surface under many feet of mud and rock sixty miles downstream. Seven debris flows large enough to reach Puget Sound have occurred in the past 6,000 years.

What a shame no Mercy vouchsafed unto Polynesia! If only California coastal cities could be visited by Justice.

Those who flip God "the bird" should go away forever.

"According to Red Cross officials, three of Tonga's outlying islands suffered severe damage after being hit by 49-foot waves caused by the volcanic eruption on Saturday."

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/worl...of-water-most-structures-destroyed/ar-AASWqsT

"Katie Greenwood, the head of delegation in the Pacific for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, (IFRC) told the Associated Press most of the structures and houses on the islands of Nomuka, Mango and Fonoifua are destroyed." :(:(:(:(
