The best synthetic training I know about was in 2004 when a joint service team used a MC-130E Combat Talon 1 Super Hercules gunship to attack a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Afghanistan.

The treatment of terrorists allows them to return to terrorist operations - until the change in US policy interfering with the treatment.

So much is contracted out it's difficult to get a clear picture other than the results.

Meanwhile, the synthetic training environments help the unemployable and contractors.
