I can see that while the reasons why people found this site are varied, Most everyone here has a personal belief or conviction that things are about to change and that they need to be prepared for some reason. There are many, many theories and thoughts on the topic of what people think will be the likely cause of catastrophic global chaos. A big earthquake, economic collapse, WW3, a virus....What's your opinion?

I think it would be an economic collapse. Either that or a war. But I think the government will be a leading cause if a disaster were to happen. With that being said, I don't think something bad will happen. I like to think the best. But I also choose to be prepared.

    She's an individual, that's why. :p

Ha, but seriously I think the whole point is to prepare for anything and everything as none of us are psychic and we actually have absolutely no idea what's coming next. That's why it's best to be as prepared as you possibly can be. :)

I know it's a nothing answer, but it's my view nonetheless.

I think a war would be the main cause. Either a nuclear fallout, or a major war, like World War 3. Of course those things don't have to be independent of each other. There's lots of people who don't agree with what democratic countries like America are doing. Countries like Russia, North Korea, and China have always been on the opposite ends of us. The fact that China and Russia are some of the other major powers in this world, means that one possible wrong move could mean some big, big problems. I think we'll be able to handle it, but it's a possibility that we have to be aware of.

I am always very pragmatic about this and whatever happens, whatever becomes the reason for the destruction of the earth and human kind, the real reason is people. We are the main reason for all the things that are happening and will happen in the future. Some good but mostly bad things. It is very unfair and hypocritical to say economy will destroy the earth or some war. We made those, economy , war, weapons, some diseases ... Those are the things we created so we are the responsible ones and we do not do a thing to change anything. We bow to money. We all know that people are starving in Africa but we still buy meaningless stuff to please ourselves. We are supposed to die. When? That is a question.

I'm worried it with be a mix of global warming and WW3. It's scary to think that if we don't learn from our mistakes we are forced to repeat it and repeating it is inevitable. I truly hope it doesn't but I've seen my husband play fall out and think how scary it would be if that would happen.

But at the same time we can't help others if we can't fix ourselves first. Yeah there are people starving in other countries and have horrible diseases but OUR OWN people are struggling with diseases and out on the street but we will give a ton of money to others first and the media makes it seem wonderful when we should be focusing on our country first.

America will cause SHTF to happen, there is no other honest response. Everything that is a problem in this world can be traced back to America in some way. If it does happen, the American way will die. If new societies and communities were to arise from the destruction of the international standard way of life that we currently live, anyone out there trying to bring back the American way by voicing their leadership methods about which direction human kind should be pointed in will probably be destroyed by those who oppose it.

They will see you as a poisonous leech that does not need to speak anymore.

Wow. The possibilities are endless. Any number of things could cause the SHTF: unstable economy here or abroad, ISIS subjects us to a bigger terrorist attack than 9/11 or a pandemic we are not yet prepared for. America has its vulnerabilities like any other country.

it'll either be one of two things, either natural-a severe storm or even a solar storm, maybe a meteor hitting the earth. or (more likely) it will be man made, WW3 or some form of imports embargo that causes WW3, or something caused by a political decision like the cutting off of oil supplies or chemicals. whatever it is it will cause first hardship, then protests, then riots and eventually societal collapse.

The most likely event, by far, is an electromagnetic bomb or other similar attack that will destroy the electrical grid of the country basically crippling them for many years. The U.S., with its aging electrical grid, would be very vulnerable to this attack and it would all-but-destroy the economy so having a plan for this contingency is important. An attack such as this causes no fallout or other adverse environmental conditions but would be a crippling blow .. a Pearl Harbor for the 21st Century .. only on a scale three orders of magnitude greater.

not just the US either, the UK has an overland grid delivery system which is open to all manner of attacks, both man made and natural.
take out the power grid and its curtains for most of the population.

I'm honestly thinking it will be something natural these days because we have this economic international problem under control. The governments are not going to voluntarily allow the nations to fail because it would eliminate the need for they current jobs. I can see something like a solar storm happening like you said because that's nature and we don't have any control over what happens with the sun, we are raccoons in the middle of some head lights when you think about it like that.

At this point, there are many possible causes for SHTF situations. So with the increasing probability of having to endure and hopefully survive at least one of these situations..we can't live in denial. Survival depends on learning intently and preparing for the worst and thus preparing us for most all situations. Of course, we can't realistically prepare for all situations..but being prepared to any degree increases your chance of survival and survival of your loved ones.

I see it not as a single event but a short series of events!
With each event by itself not a civilization ending event but taken as a short series totally devastating!
Might start with a financial crash followed closely by disease then a natural event!
    Just speculation here!

I really don't want to get political, but this incoming administration has me leaning towards a financial collapse with WWIII as a close second.

If you don't want to get political then don't. Hillary sold off uranium to the Russians. Lucky Trump and Putin get along fine and would likely talk about grabbing P's and laugh a little. Then get serious and we won't launch any nukes. A war, the little fat spoiled kid will start on if it starts.

I think its greed that will bring us down. The big rich guys would destroy the earth for a buck. If they think they are losing power somehow we get talked into war. Think what this world would be like without greed.

I liked the above posts, indeed all who responded had valuable opinions.

Me, not only do I believe that I'm without a clue as to what will tip the huge line of dominoes, I believe that such is unknowable.

"Our God is in heaven and does whatever He pleases. " Psalm 115:3

Irony of ironies that I should wax religious or metaphysical, not being particularly religious myself, but the people of this planet -- especially people from the Western culture -- have turned away from anything spiritually positive. I believe that God is utterly unknowable, but yet I find myself praying for the newly departed, people who are sick, people who are caught up in dire straights. I don't believe this world to be the only world the soul will occupy -- i.e. we should be growing here to prepare for worlds to come. All God's Prophets have spoken of such.

And speaking of the Prophets, let us not forget that They have all warned us of the End Times. If we are not facing the end-times today, then I don't know what could be worse! Without Spiritual guidance, world leaders who the people have either put into power or have stood by and endured with little opposition, have driven the cultures of the Earth into a situation resembling an enormous house of cards. Does anyone know how far in debt are the banks, the governments themselves?! Where lie Earth's largest cities -- they are built on earthquake fault lines, they are built where tsunamis wash away the face of the Earth. Can anyone list all of the countries that possess nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, such as engineered viruses and bacteria immune from all treatments! I could continue to list hideous monsters of destruction hiding around the next bend.

Survivalists are not crazy people as portrayed by the self-assured press. Survivalists are the people who are actually paying attention.

Survivalists are not greedy, we know full good and well that many people must make it to the other side of the hideous years ahead. If civilization is to grow back, then it would be handy if some people were left alive. We WANT there to be a future -- we are the quintessential anti-nihilists.

But back to what will push the current situation over the edge, I don't really think we are meant to know. Superstitious me, I feel that God is holding a stick behind His back. He has been profoundly lenient, but all of this decadence has gone way too far. Humankind has been cast into the desert before and we will be cast into the desert again.

I think the best bet, because you can't prep for every disaster that could befall the planet, is to prep for the disaster most likely to befall your area of the world. I would also say that there is a huge divide between spirituality a religion. And also that spirituality is not exclusive to religion. I am for the most part areligious my beliefs run more towards paganism/native american. So many religions have become corrupt to the point where they compete with the corporations for the ole mighty dollar. That is a sickness! It poisons the soul.

i have always made my preps all encompassing, I don't have one bag for this event and another for something else, I prepare to survive-pure and simple.
having a few supplies for the more minor events is good, but if you want to survive the big one and live long term POST shtf you need more skills and knowledge than shed loads of gear.

I tend to be pragmatic, it will come down to greed and self interest.
Someone else will take issue with the origin of the conflict and the rhetoric will start. Escalation will put it into the global arena and the fires will start burning. I see it everyday on the news. The difference will be no one will see it as a problem and calm it down before it is out of control. Daily, I see or read about events that couldncause it, it will just take one more event than those trying to stabalize can control and it will fall apart like a house of cards. Pandemic, war, economic, racial tensions, religious differences, economic inequality: take you pick. End results are likely to be the same. How far we slide back to 18th century technology depends on how out of control and how global it goes. I am aiming to be able to set up indefinitely at an 18th century level with equipment, tools and lifestyle that I can build and maintain indefinitely. Anything less than a total collapse should then be easier to adjust to.

Y'know, people giggle at the idea of a big volcano going off, however we in N.America have some royal ticking time bombs that could do unimaginable damage to our breadbasket states. Both the Cascade volcanic mountain range (British Columbia down into Oregon) and the Yellowstone caldera could do unimaginable damage to the USA. And, nobody gives a thought about these potential monsters. How dain bramaged!

Think about life. What is most dangerous?! What is most painful?! Answer: Getting slammed in the kidneys; an attacker coming from out of the unseen.

i've often thought of yellowstone and Cascade volcanic mountain range..but yet, what's the chances of us surviving something like that?take yellowstone for example.1000's dead within 1 hour of its eruption.then there's the volcanic dust to whatever.it'll cover the outer hemisphere to the point of no sun light getting through for i dont know, how many years..complete die off of certain animals..and i think.all plants..then there's the few people who survived it.how will the live? where will they get their food and drink?

Wow, What will cause shtf... big question.
Name some things and pick one.
All things SHTF don't only happen on the macro scale, but also on a personal level. Loss of a job, spouse, etc.
No one here is a fortune teller, we can offer up advice based on personal experience though.
Many of us don't prep for any specific thing, rather we generalize our preps.
Then you can branch out with more specific preps like Potassium Iodide (mostly for children), and radiation detectors.
Weapons to protect your family and preps.

Me, I think that it is entirely possible that 2/3 of the Earth's human population could be lost in an apocalyptic event ... maybe more. But, it's happened before. As Faulker said, "I believe that man will not merely endure; he will prevail."

yeah,it is possible man will survive some thing like that..but yet it won't be the ones that are to society dependant..it'll be the ones with the necessary skills, capabilities, tools, knowledge, etc etc that'll survive..and seeing how people have become more society dependant,in the last 10-20 years.and less self dependant and less self reliant.i can only guess that up to 80 to 90 % of the people will die off..

My bias in the realm of percentages comes from being raised in one of the parts of America where the people are self-sufficient and moral. There are vast regions of America where groups of people will cluster together for survival purposes. America's urban areas are write-offs; they are basically doomed unless they have "country cousins". Which reminds me, I need to get my rototiller and garden tools out of storage next week.

If a group of survivalists is too small, they stand to be wiped out completely. History shows and it is generally agreed-upon that small communities will do best when facing civil war and/or major hardships. Humans form larger packs than wolves. Possessing varying specialities among its members makes any survival community more robust. Multiple souls will have to man the perimeter while members are building/repairing machinery, cooking, resting, and some percentage will be ill with this or that infection/disorder, thus temporarily out of action. Think of such a community as being your basic military firebase. When it hits the fan, "cowboys" and "heroes" are dead meat pretty quick. I had an uncle who was caught-up in the Battle of the Bulge; he was a forward observer -- miraculously, he survived ... super high attrition among those who were on these teams. No teamwork = death.

In the end no matter what the initial cause may be the true SHTF and TEOTWAWKI will be caused by a growing level of ignorance and stupidity. The problem is that as our technological abilities grew we as a species started getting soft and stupid. If you look at it from a totally evolutionary point you will see that the people that used to either die or at the very least be unable to feed a family are now the biggest breeders. They have pilled up in HUGE urban ant hills that are totally dependent on a massive technology to keep them alive. Without power NYC will be totally without water or food in three days. They can't walk out of town fast enough to survive and the death count in these sort of places will be close to 100%. In America it is almost like we PAY people that won't work to suport their kids to have MORE and MORE kids. This is NOT something that a healthy and intelligent culture would encourage. Now the poor from all over the world want to come here and get on the dole and have kids.

While the cities will burn the people that already left will be a tough bunch to come and take. We all are workers and there are a lot of good reasons that we left the urban and even suburban places. Living rural changes you. NOBODY delivers food to my house and driving 15 miles each way into town to get supper sucks. Rural people already keep more food on hand just because it isn't easy to run to the store. We in America and on the Continent have allowed too many people to pile up in our big cities. They are not healthy places and are becoming more and more unsustainable. The murder rates in these places are going through the roof here. The more they take away the guns and pour more money into the welfare programs the more messed up those places get. It is stupid. Taking the guns from good honest people doesn't lower the murder rate or make you safer. Where I live nearly everybody is armed and the crime rate is tiny and murder when it happens here it is an act of passion not just a random drive by shooting. We don't have road rage fights and to tell you the truth we are pretty polite people.

The end when it comes will be because we were stupid and both did not prepare for it, foresee it and when it happens we won't react until it is too late. When we do react we will probably do the worst possible thing. Riots and fires are not solutions but that is going to be the main reaction to any problem.

most of the UK population are soft and technology dependant, I think that SHTF when it comes is more likely to be caused by humans than by nature, remove technology and electricity, food deliveries and fuel, most of the British population wont survive because they haven't been trained to do so, they have been brought up to rely on the system for all their needs, thinking for themselves is not something they've ever had to do, self reliance is something that happened "in the old days" not in the 21st century.
a 10% survival rate would be the same as that of the 18th century and I think there is very few who could live that sort of lifestyle-nor would want to.
"community" after the event is all well and good, but first we need people to survive before any sort of community is possible. if the numbers aren't there neither will the community.

In future, multiple SHTF events will occur. For starters, the Earth's human population will be greatly reduced in the next few decades / years. Pacific "Ring of Fire" earthquakes and undersea mountain range landslides (sides of mountains coming off) are going to trigger unimaginably huge tsunamis. These will annihilate coastal cities. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are going to take-out blocks of humanity. Viruses that attack the body's immune system and/or blood-clotting system are going to become robust and bring about mind-numbing reductions in the human population.

World economies are fragile and fiat currencies are no longer backed by anything. (If I wrote bad checks as does my government, I would be thrown UNDER the jail.) And the urban sheeple around the planet are utterly without any sort of self-sufficiency. Are the latter two situations a bad combo? I'm thinking, ... yes.

Our planet has become fragile, a house of cards, dominoes lined up for a fall, ..., pick your metaphor, some "whatever" is going to happen triggering a cascade of profoundly negative events. Look back through history. History is chocked full of apocalyptic events and if you show the average Joe what's happened, he'll just get a silly look on his face, giggle, and say something like, "Wow, bummer dude! Glad those things don't happen anymore."

Yes we have grown soft and yes ignorance and stupidity will be our downfall!
It is as if the world is in the middle of a "PANDEMIC OF STUPID" and most are too stupid to even recognise the problem let alone fix it!

It needs several generations of real hardship to fix it!

I'm not seeing an all out nuclear war.
    M.A.D. Mutually assured destruction.
No one wants that with this caveat.
    L'il Kim of North Korea.
    He's NUTS.
Hitler was nuts and look what happened.
Japan wanted to conquer all the pacific territories.
    Islam, really Radical Islam.
The Koran contains 109 verses to KILL the infidel. (that'd be most of us I think.)
    It's 109 commandments, not suggestions.
There are 2.1 BILLION Muslims world wide. 15% believe in, support, or are involved in
    violent jihad.
There is the real next threat.
China might survive a nuclear war. There is a child born in China every second.
    Google it.
If some Chinese survive a nuclear world war there won't be much infrastructure left.
Nuclear war is the last thing I'd be worried about and the one thing there isn't
    much to be done about.
I'm in N.E. Ohio so I'd be nuclear dust real quick I think.

Our biggest threat here in Australia is from within. Our own government is hand in hand with Indonesia & sanctions the Genocide in West Papua. Our government is trying it's best to disarm us, & bit by bit it is setting in place more & more control measures. Semi-automatics are now banned here & they want to restrict the number of guns we are allowed to own, as well as re-categorizing some types of guns & requiring "proof of need" for different types of firearms.
From what I have read on various gun forums, many gun owners seem to think this is just the government being stupid, but I think there is a bigger picture, & I don't like where it is going. Recently the National Firearms Agreement was made public. No one apart from myself has made any comment (in the media that I follow) regarding the fact that this agreement states that it is illegal to use a firearm for self defence or in the defence of family. The Australian government has already banned the owning/possession & carrying of any item that is specifically intended for use in self defence, & yet every day there is more attacks, rapes & killings on our streets & in our homes.
Our government is the biggest threat to our security & way of life.
    Keith.

I'm sorry to say that SUCKS.
I had an e-friend in South Africa and that government is very anti-private gun ownership.

Another government that refuses to trust it's citizens.

Up until this cheeto flavored loon trump took office, I would have said, global pandemic. But despite his claims, he is NOT a good businessman and knows nothing about running a country. His mouth is our worst enemy, he is in bed with our enemies and has insulted our allies. He will destroy our environment, destroy our currency and widen the gap between the haves and have nots. Civil war is also not out of the question.

i think Trump is a breath of fresh air compared to Obama or Hillary, if Clinton had got in the US would already be at war with Russia. the rhetoric coming out of some places, mainly the Democrats, has to be seen to be believed, its like going back to the 50s and "reds under the bed".

News flash, we are at war with russia! Most of it is cyber cold war crap, but war none the less! Trump is a breath of fetid swamp gas! So you are OK with him enriching himself by executive order? You are fine with him and the republicans destroying the environment? What about him do you consider fresh?
