It's obvious that the three vices are bad (sometimes, more than we can imagine), but each one of them offers many very peculiar problems (and all of them obviously are bad things). Unfortunately, I have some great examples of some friends in all three situations and this is a very sad situation. It's amazing (in a bad way, of course) to see how much people can change because of those addictions... They end up hurting themselves and hurting people around and caring about them.

I can't choose which is the worst. How about you?

I should be able to choose since I do all three of them haha. But rather than choosing one of them I think we have to consider a few points here.

1- All forms of addiction are bad. drug or non drug (An addiction to a video game could be just as harmful as an addiction to alcohol)
2- The vices take different proportions for different people. For example, My grandfather was an alcoholic and a smoker. Both are bad, but his worst addictions was alcohol because it made him aggressive. Now take me instead. I drink, i smoke and I gamble. My worst addiction is gambling because I lost good money on it. Even though I drink and smoke too no other addiction has caused me so much damage as gambling.

3- While none of the three are healthy i believe we can coexist with our addictions. Nowadays i still drink, smoke and gamble but i don't lose money like i used to. So moderation is the key always.

I can say without an iota of doubt that alcohol addiction is the worst, if my intermittent experience in drinking is anything to go by. Alcohol not only ruins your health making you age prematurely, it also exposes you to brain and testicle shrinking, cancer and hangovers. It exposes you to accidents and crime besides ruining your pockets. And its usually accompanied with cigarette smoking which is also grievous. I can go on and on.

For me, the worst addiction is gambling. I know a person who went to rehab for excessive gambling. He was rich. Owned 3 properties, a dozen of cars and a couple of businesses.

This addiction can wipe out your entire fortune in just a few blink of an eye. With smoking or being alcoholic, the good thing about that is you will stop if your not feeling well. With gambling, there is no excuse not to do it. The more you loose, the more you want to get back the money you lost.

Well having lost some money in gambling I can attest to that. It seems your fella had the same problem I had. About a year ago I lost my job and was attracted to the "easy and fun money" Although I haven't lost properties nor cars I have lost a good deal of money that could have gone to better purposes. When you win you just want to win more and when you lose you want to recuperate what you lost. It's a deadly addiction.

I think gambling for me. I've seen a lot of terrible things that started through gambling. Sometimes gambling losses could trigger their alcohol consumption, which leads them to make rash decisions and resolve to violence towards others. But all three could be a nightmare to tackle with, I guess it would only depend on the perspective of the person and his outlook on life. But for me, I think smoking is the least of the three you've mentioned.

It all depends on the quantity. I used to be an occasional smoker but regular drinker. Every weekend I'd smoke on or two cigarettes but drink liters and liters of beer. Like I said in my earlier post everyone has one major weak spot, their "Achilles Heel". For some, it might be a certain drug or any of the three mentioned above.

Ah, all of these addictions are so bad... asking to pick from these is like asking to pick the lesser evil.

I guess, due to personal experience, I'd have to pick alcohol. I had an uncle that died from alcoholism. He drank for years and years - very heavily. It completely destroyed his family and his business. We all tried so hard to help him but he was in so deep... in the end, the alcohol destroyed his health and his liver gave up. That's why I hate alcohol and don't really drink unless special occasions.

Addiction is addiction. I've seen it kill lots of people, to include family. I've always had problems in becoming addicted, like I smoked cigarettes but only three or five a day and so giving them up entirely was easy. I started to get a cough, so I quit.

Never became a drunk like my dad, but am enjoying my new-found over-drinking here in the past five years or so. Wow, liquor is great! Too expensive, however. Crap! I'm not, let me repeat, NOT drinking just anything, no no no, my whiskey / whisky MUST have been in a barrel for a good long time or I'm not drinking it. Guess that crimps my alcoholic pursuits. And I only drink at night -- how's that going to help me deal with the filthy evil people I must work with during the day?!!!!!!

Can't return to ganja, too many years ago, and I can't afford to cook what bit of memory abilities I have left.

It is pretty #### bad when a person can't even find solace in addiction. So it goes.

Anything that consumes you to the point that is clouds your judgment or effects your health is bad. Some addictions such as being unable to perform tasks such as driving without texting is as dangerous to other people as yourself, so I would say any addiction that endangers others as well as yourself are the most dangerous.

Alcohol ruins the body and partly the mind as well when the addiction is severe. Alcoholics are prone to diseases of the liver and even stroke. With cigarettes, you get unlucky if you are hit by a lung-related disease. But most smokers enjoy their smoking until their old age years. Gamblers are not at the risk of diseases unlike smokers and drinkers. However, for gambling addicts who have no money, they would commit crime just to tolerate their vice. So I'd say gambling is the worst addiction.

I think alcohol addiction is the worst and I say this because I have experienced at a very close range how it can destroy a life. Alcohol addiction is not easily detected because after all, it's just a little drinking at first. A very good friend of mine is completely taken over by this addiction and yet he insists he is not alcoholic and refuses to go to rehab. He has lost virtually everything except his life. His business, his marriage, home. Friends are gone and hes moved back to his parents place. I weep inside when I see him because he was such a brilliant young man who somehow got derailed in life.

Might be biased, but my father had all three but alcoholism was the worst one. Thinking you're a god and everyone else is underneath you is a crappy trait when you are raising kids. I can stand the gambling and smoking (in comparison) since alcoholism is a constant threat to our lives, since he was prone to outbursts and may as well end up killing us in our sleep since he kept threatening us while he is in his drunken stupor. That's it, I'm gonna cut this comment short because I'd rather not talk about it more.

Addiction in any form is bad, not just alcohol, cigarettesand gambling, but addictions like gaming, watching porn etc. are also bad. Even a simple act like checking social media sites can be really bad if a person is addicted to it.
Among alcohol, cigarette and gambling, I think alcohol is the worst addiction. It is a slow poision. Gambling only eats your money, but alcohol eats money as well as health.

I can easily choose and it would be the alcohol. I smoke, and I'm addicted. I've never gambled, but I took time out of my life for about 4 years and became an alcoholic. God took it away completely, 100% cause I wasn't strong enough to do it on my own. I pretty much ruined my life, my kids wouldn't have anything to do with me, I lost everything I had, I almost died several times from alcohol poisoning. I drank whiskey and not in moderation, and it wasn't pretty.

It's hard to choose which one is the worst than the other, Alcohol is Bad I livid with Alcoholic so I remember seing an old person who drinks till he vomit on me! It is really bad Not only people loose control for themselves but also they do things they regret later, As for Cigars Oh my God! When I read what it does to the liver I ask myself why do people like to kill themselves slow by slow? While for Gambling this is crazy really A man or a woman who has a house he/ She worked for all of her life then He gives it for a bet And looses it just like that!!
All these Addiction don't hurt only the self but also people around you plus the thing they have in common is that The three are shortcut to the poverty.

Addiction in general is the problem, not any specific substance or action but the inability to stop a self destructive behaviour. Behaviour that also destroys the people around you. Opium in itself isn't evil but when you see the misery that heroin addiction causes it can be heartbreaking. It's a nonsense to ask which addiction is worse...they all destroy lives or relationships.
