So, I've been noticing that when visiting this site, my computer CPU temps starts to rise immediately (I have a widget that shows it in real time as well as fan RPM)

Normally temp stays down about 120º with the fan at 2000 RPM. But as soon as I start browsing here the temp shoots up to 160º and the fan spins up to max speed of 6000RPM as if the computer is working very hard. Normally even something like watching a video doesn't do this, usually it takes serious data crunching or playing a game to do this...I've never noticed just a website needing the fan to ramp up like that.

I'm not savy in web design so I have no idea what could be going on....just that something here makes my computer work hard, or think it needs to work hard.

Just curious what this could be.

No idea, my computer never acts up. The site does slow down from time to time but my system (laptop) never kicks in the cooling fan.

My browser actually popped up a warning the other day "This website is using significant energy, closing it may improve the responsiveness of your computer"

Haven't actually had a problem with the computer or the website running slow...but something happens here that makes the fan kick on, which seems odd given that its just a forum and shouldn't have anything processor heavy happening.

That certainly is strange, and it could be happening to others and they may not be aware of it. I do hope they take notice of this thread and do a little checking on their own computers...

I checked mine and you're right, this site is smoking my Chromebook processor at a high rate ( 63 on the CPU), but survivalistboards.com and other heavyweight sites are burning less than 8 on my CPU!!

By the way, here is a link to start a conversation with the site's administrator, branchd77:

Odd, I haven't had that issue at all. What kind ad add blocker are you using? I also run no script, so that may help.

I don't have any "issues" either, other than an extraordinarily high CPU usage, which is far higher than any other site that I compare it to. Why on earth does my computer have to work so hard to be here?????

I have AdBlockerPlus, and it is showing that there are NO ads to block on this site.

I encourage everyone reading this thread to check their CPU usage, via your computer's "Task Manager."

For comparison purposes, it would be helpful if people posted what their CPU numbers are in this thread.

Checked task manager, using Opera (browser used for this site) with 21 items listed (lots of open sites) I am only using 12% of my CPU, so can't help here. I do use a very powerful laptop, very good processor (CPU) and GPU, so maybe that makes a difference.

I checked again just now. During the last ten minutes or so, the numbers were running between 1 - 20 on my CPU usage for this site, instead of the crazy numbers I was seeing earlier today.

My issue exactly....no issue per se....but at the moment my computer fan is going full speed and my CPU temp is up to 160º

I'm running a macbook pro, safari, intel core 2.5 i7 16 GB of ram, ad block plus.

I have nothing open on my computer except my browser and this page and my CPU is running at 31%!!!

To put this in perspective, survivalistboards uses 1%

I hope the website manager or someone is reading this post. Nothing here should be using that much CPU power.

I'm not a big conspiracy guy....but seriously....is someone outsourcing.....I don't know....brute force security hacks on our computers or something?

First of all just because your CPU getting hotter doesn't mean your CPU also working harder for any specific task. To get accurate reading you need to check the CPU Utilization, Processes, Threads, etc.

When you open your browser there are many things (a lot of small wheels) going at work at the same time and not necessarily transparent to you. Even when your system is idle there are plenty of background task at work and this is particularly true for Windows, and even in Linux there are always some background task at work.

    Bingo.

I am well aware of background tasking....but this site is using an order of magnitude more processing power than other sites I visit. I don't know what that means...but it means something.

I go to the task manager but all the Opera stuff is running low, highest was 13%. The task manager does not break out the individual sites name but even my high is low. Any suggestions for more testing?

Just throwing this out there...but doing some research it looks like a common cause of high CPU usage from a website is a form of malware that uses YOUR cpu to preform bitcoing mining while you visit the site. Not accusing the site owners of anything but want to point out there are real reasons to be worried by a site using your CPU without an obvious cause.

And that is how you start doing diagnostic

Well SB is pretty damn lightweight in term of computing resources and I do prefer SB color scheme compare to this forum (it's easier on the eyes).

But this forum did use more resources to open. I haven't check this forum script (sorry doesn't have the time or patience to do so) but if I have to hazard a guess this forum require roughly the same amount of CPU comparable to Facebook desktop page. Typically the increase of CPU utilization is caused by active content or ads, unfortunately I have multilayer of ads filtering in place with the first layer is in network provider side, thus I can't tell what kind of ads that were display in this forum without checking the page source.

Anyway I understand this forum did consume more CPU utilization although I kinda surprise as how much CPU resources it take in Mac

Personally I like simple, lightweight load for just browsing around. Even my day-to-day browser has nothing fancy in it.(running Windows 10 Home)

Ok, here is what I found. With no script off, my browser is using 42% with 2 pages open on this site. With no script on, I use 13% on this site. Adblocker is on both ways. I will close this site and go to SB and check both ways, but apparently there are some background scripts running here.

Ok, on SB 13% with noscript off and 4% with no script on. There are definitely background scripts. Get noscript guys.

Disabling Javascript reduces usage down to 1% for me.

But still....what is it doing that is so intensive when its on? Relatively complicated 'dirty' sites like huffington post, or ign...or um....worse....don't use more than a few percent. Of the various sites I regularly visit online, this is one asks the most from my CPU of any of them.

So is there any conclusion here about this issue........???

I know so little about computers.........I don't even know what background script is.

I would have thought that this forums Administrator/Owner would have joined this thread conversation.

I agree. The forum needs streamlining. Check out the formatting for just the header section of this forum page. Look at all the scripts.

Maybe try running noscript for a more responsive, less processor intensive page?

Also notice how many css style sheets have to be consulted here, compared to only one for the other forum.

Configuring noscript isn't for everyone. I don't even use it for day to day browsing (including for posting this). I even use Google Chrome (screenshot posted above) for this forum ;). I reserve my Linux system for doing other things.

Can someone post a specific page where they have this problem or is it the entire site?

It's the whole site. No other site does this too me. It might be JS related.

It definitely is a java script issue because I have turned off JS completely in my browser and page load times are a flash with JS off. Unfortunately it breaks a lot of things as it would be.
