I know some here don't grasp the need for comms/electronics when it hits the fan but this fella makes some good quality videos and it's well worth looking through his channel

When the invalid regime in D.C. shuts-down media that hasn't been vetted by the socialist gods, the pro-Constitution youth (under age 60 yrs) of America will need communications to organize a guerrilla resistance movement. Former military and current law enforcement will need this comm to stay in touch with other pro-Constitutional forces.

Comms will not be the problem, codes will! I don't know of any available communication devices the PTB can't listen in on or track back to it's source. Mobile and short messages will be required and then will only be viable if it is encrypted in such a way as to way as to protect the information being sent. Distribution of the codes will be the problem. Any code can be broken or be deciphered given enough resources and time OR if the code has been compromised. Resistance cells will be captured and captives will talk. History has many examples of broken codes.

I have never felt I would have any need to communicate with anyone WTSHTF, listening in yes, but communicating no. and I have a couple of radios for that purpose.
seems to me keeping quiet and not getting noticed is the best policy post SHTF.

TMT your talking about needing codes etc when in reality the idea of emergency comms and comms in general post fall is simply to communicate with others inside your community and farther afield...like using a cell phone now and thats how most preppers see it, simply a handy tool to have; don't read too much into potential pitfalls, look for issues that are not there.

Lone Wolf, your hand crank radio is OK but post fall you want something to can listen to the surviving hams with, look at Tecsun radios, not over priced for what they are. Remember that FM stations are pretty much local stations and AM (medium wave) stations are shutting down pretty much on a global level so you really need something with HF (short wave) capability if you want to listen.

I'm not that bothered post fall TBH Max.
I limit my communications in the here and now to forums, and post collapse I wont be communicating with anyone, as for listening in post collapse any info will be too general in nature and too far away to be of any use.
as for codes you could use prepper "slang" i.e. TPTB means "the government", BOL means "the retreat or the cabin", etc.etc. (just use the letters not the full saying).

And all the other preppers good and bad would know that code.

I watched (full version) this again recently, great film, great fella but even he was not alone and relied on others for supplies and I believe even a 'lone wolf' like you would need similar interaction at time with others if your to survive.

    Well worth watching

you have learned nothing from being a member of this forum. your argumentative attitude wont win you any admirers either now or post collapse.
interaction with outsiders post SHTF could be fatal.

It is not much for comms but the prepper group in UPstate Virginia....I have sent them another Baofeng walkie talkie...but also a Shortwave Set...the Tecsun model 660 which has on it SSB capability and an External antenna.

Most of those shortwave sets the little telescoping antenna is marginal at best..as well as overly delicate/fragile.....and some kind of long wire antenna is needed to get decent signals.

I have one of those Tecsun 660 radios at work in a special locker along with a 8 Watt Baofeng radio and roll up antenna...spare batteries too.

For my VHF/UHF walkie talkie to really get out I take it to the roof of our 85 foot building and install my Abree 42.5 inch fold up antenna to it.

    https://www.amazon.com/42-5-Inch-AB...1628533167&sprefix=abree+42.5+,aps,157&sr=8-4

If I am looking for news and information outside of the controlled media...I go to the shortwave bands or tune in other hams....or even foreign Broadcasts when they broadcast in English.

You members decide for yourselves...but most of our Media here in America is to me clearly compromised including the fabled Fox News....

I do not trust Fox News....nor Chicken Noodle News as well.

But there are alternative means of getting other information.

Oh...and the Tecsun model 660 will also get the CB bands...and in SSB mode as well.

I can also access the Short wave bands from any of my Ham HF radios here at home...as well as in my Truck...CB bands on my ham radios as well.

I recommended Tecsun to LW, good radios; I've had an old Sony for years and years and its small but a really good reciever; I got a used Tecsun and again its a good radio.

Chris I'm taking my Advanced/Full license exam in a few weeks, new iCom 7300 waiting in the sidelines :)

    Good for you Max..

Years ago I bought a Grundig short wave with SSB for my mother. As I recall it was called a Yacht Boy 400 and had SSB on it as well.

But for the monies..I am very satisfied with the Tecsun model 660 and have now put back some 3 of them.

I still have in my garage my mothers olde Grundig Tube radio...with all the short wave bands back then. It had remarkably good audio...in addition to a very nice looking cabinet.

Good luck to you on your test...

    Cheers Chris

I'd say the intermediate exam is harder than the advanced if you had no electronics background, bigger learning curve sort of thing so I'm not worried about this final exam. Multiple choice, you get your result there and then, apply for your new callsign and its job done. All it does really is allow me to use more power and also communicate via radio ham satellites.

IIRC my dad had a Grundig reel to reel when I was a lad hooked up to the stereo system, lots of Rolling Stones and old blues numbers when I was a kid :)

I agree I've learned zero survival skills here because they are not discussed here. I'm not argumentative but I detest falsehoods and nonsense in general so will speak up when I encounter them. This forum is not a self help group where we hug each other and chant the same mantra's, differing ideas is healthy and provides food for thought. The more grounded members like Rebecca and Ystranc seem to post less and less which is a shame.

I'd be fine post collapse, still quite young, very fit, broad range of four season outdoor and other skills, combat experience and I'm a natural leader so don't worry about me mate ;)

On a practical note the cheapo polytunnel I got is bursting with cucumbers, chillis, sweet peppers and tomatoes, its proven to be a really good investment and I'll be looking at something bigger and stronger for next year and I've got pots of herbs growing like crazy and I'll be drying a lot of them. The chillis/peppers/toms/cucs will go into things like chutney and some dried.

More young people managed to get themselves dead doing stupid risk taking adventures than us older wiser folks. Old folks understand the concept of "Risk vs. Reward".

It always makes me laugh when I hear the term "natural leader" bandied about, such arrogance and ignorance will get a lot of people killed fast in a post collapse world.

It has been my experience that those that claim to be "Natural Born Leader" have few if any followers. Many of the "Natural Born Leaders tend to suffer from shoulder problems due to having to continually pat themselves on the back.

I have no desire to be or become a leader.

However...sometimes circumstances make it the lesser of two evils...issue in survival...if that even makes sense.

In that I often think of an admire the Ancient Roman story of Cincinnatus....who stepped down from a significant leadership position to return home to farming....as I recall the history.

Or even Harry Truman who declared he was content to go home and just be an American Citizen.

Being a leader is too often a huge huge responsibility....and the responsibility can all too often outweigh the benefits.

On top of all that it can be a full time responsibility to handle the tasks just around here.

A certain amount of Humility in ones daily affairs is always good....and people notice those traits.

But they also know and or recognize when one knows what one is talking about...and that one can do....get things done....particularly in sticky/risky situations...

When I was a young lad....helping my Father with his tasks....I would often look about at all the other kids playing, laughing and or having a good time...and I so wanted to be out there with them. But Dad would not have it when he had things to do and needed help.

But today I understand the difference.

I used to think every young man knew and did the things I do and knew because they were males....not so.

Many out here are watchers...not doers.

And come to learn late in my life.....many males out here today are raised primarily by females and hence know little of the things I know or do....but they sure can push buttons.

Mind you now...this does not make me better than others...but I know it makes me different.

But in all these growing pains ...I came to understand why my Father was rough on us in his own way.

And that was because he knew he would not always be there to pick us up when we fell or bloodied our noses so to speak.

He wanted us to be able to stand against that day when he would return to his fathers...to the dust.

And with that came great respect and love for my father....and my mother too who taught me the benefits of reading...as she was a voracious reader.

The ability to solve problems...often at great "Risk" are traits that I admire in certain individuals....and look for in leadership...the ability to solve tasks safely ....and come home in one piece...and know how to do this.

I do not admire Drama, Drama, Drama...or the manufacturing of bad guys/the blame game in lieu of problem solving...

This is not leadership....it is Ishmael.

    Ok...back on the comms topic....

    Xiegu G90 radios ...

I have purchased several of these Xiegu G 90 model HF radios and modified them. Also I have put them away in Metal Ammo Boxes and wrapped them in Aluminum Foil before inserting them into these metal ammo cans.

Amazon.com: Xiegu G90 HF Radio 20W SSB/CW/AM/FM 0.5-30MHz, Plus 60 Meters with BridgeCom University Course and Built in Antenna Tuner : Electronics

The microphone and accessories have also been wrapped in aluminum foil and put into these ammo boxes.

After securing these radios and accessories into the metal ammo boxes...I also have put a couple of layers of a type of aluminum foil tape on the outside of the box to further secure the lid.

These radios have also been modified to transmit straight through all the frequency coverage including the CB bands.

In separate ammo cans I have placed two G5RV dipole antennas and coaxial cables.

    Amazon.com: MFJ-1778 G5RV Wire Antenna 80-10 Meters - Authorized Dealer : Electronics

I have made these preps for just in case...in like manner to how I have put back several bottles of 151 proof rum ....just in case. I am not a big drinker..Never have been and never want to so become. I do, however, recognize certain disciplined applications of alcohol...in medicinal purposes.

But....nonetheless...I have updated these communications preps ...just in case.

Am thinking of getting another spare power supply ...of some 30 amps adjustable DC voltage....and putting it away as well....just in case.

    Amazon.com: MFJ-4230MV MFJ4230MV MFJ4230-MV Original MFJ Switching Power Supply - 30 Amps, 13.8 VDC : Electronics

I am going to have to find a way or container into which to put these two spare power supplies and secure them in like manner to described above.

there are maybe 2 or 3 preppers I have met over the last decade that I could possibly work with in an emergency, but as equals not one in power the other subservient, I dont believe WTSHTF that that sort of arrangement would work, maybe self help groups, like the old M.A.G. as they used to be . but due to the distances between each it would never get off the ground.

Some people are to a degree natural leaders, my boys in the army loved me and the crew I look after now work well as a team and are a happy bunch.

I'm not a great believer in decision making by committee but I do listen to whats said because a fresh view can shine light on new areas.

Not everyone want to take the lead, they are happy being in the team and there is nothing wrong in that.

Just caught a tv show, Gordon Ramsay of all people up in Alaska, thats a beautiful part of the world, stunning and easy to watch
