As to US treasuries, everybody is dumping them. The BRICs are buying gold. Russia is buying gold even though Russia itself is a gold mining/producing nation. The dollar is dying and the US is no longer perceived as a powerful nation. The US has no Commander in Chief and its currency is unbacked.

The trick for other nations and businesses is how fast they can dump the dollar.

If the dollar/treasuries are dumped too quickly, then the dollar dies way too quickly and any current holdings in dollars will melt in the pockets of the holders. Thus, the dollar is being dropped by non-frightening increments so as not to cause panic. But anybody with a lick of sense knows that the dollar is dead. Investors are moving their money (whatever currency) into oil companies, mining companies, ... any number of companies whose foundations lie on MUST-have commodities and services. There are several must-have minerals for society to stay afloat; ex. silver, copper, lithium, rare earth metals, ... .

Come the SHTF days, governments and military entities will sacrifice tens of millions of their own citizens to stay afloat. When things get terribly bad, military entities will take over power from governments. "Might makes right". Militaries can feed their soldiers on that which they steal from the unarmed populace. Throughout history, armies have used the unarmed peasantry to perform the necessary labor -- enslavement is not a problem. "Whoever owns the guns, makes the rules."

Cuba still has major assets. Cuba gets unimaginable stacks of valuable currency (just name some currency ... to include gold) to allow drug cartel overflight airspace. Cuba's MIGs enforce that. Irony of ironies, Cuba is making mountains of money off of the tourist-trade out of Europe. Sounds capitalist ... yet, money is money. Cuba will switch to the upcoming BRICs currency. Cuba will survive. It's not going anywhere. Cuba is armed to the teeth, so it's not going to be taken-over save by Russia. Russia could come back in.
