When the power goes out and gas gets scarce, how do you plan to get the heavy work done? One system I have found (I am not a big guy) that I use a lot is a block and tackle. Very simple to construct and the necessary pieces are inexpensive. It requires rope, pulleys and an anchoring system. Moving a large weight can be dangerous and expend a lot of energy, using a block and tackle would enable the construction of many things once muscle power is the "go to" engine.

Pulleys, levers, ropes etc all part of the toolbox!

I once got bogged and only had a long rope, pulley and a chainsaw!

Fixed rope to vehicle via pulley, tossed rope over high tree branch and tied to another tree! cut tree down, falling tree pulled rope, vehicle dragged out of bog!
Thirty minutes to unbog! but an hour to clear fallen tree from track.

What about the old Dutch style windmills? They weren't terribly difficult to make and with right equipment you could do many things with them.
