Surviving with a mental patient

Ever stayed with somebody with mental or emotional problems? They are usually unpredictable and act on a whim. I used to live with my brother who developed the condition from drug abuse. I used to live on the edge since he became paranoid and suspicious and he would attack me for no reason. Some of these attacks were serious though he seems to have recovered lost ground nowadays.

 

My eldest son married a woman whose brother was schizophrenic. He had two academic degrees to his name but because of his mental illness, he became a pitiful figure in the household of my son for many years until one day he hanged himself and committed suicide.

 

Mmm of course. Every person that came from a large family core probably had to deal with a deranged family member. I do, and my brother is pretty unstable when it comes of handling stress,depression, anger, but outside of those situation is a pretty normal person. He is not currently a mental patient, but We know how to cope with his uproar episodes, only last like that for 1 hour or 2.

 

I worked for a number of years as a Registered Nurse in a Psychiatric Facility. I learned alot during those years, especially addictive behaviors and schizophrenic, AKA manic depressive, folks.

In a survival situation, it wouldn't be possible for folks with mental illness to cope. It would overwhelm them and in essence endanger others.

 

One of my undergrad majors was psych, did some practicum, plus I once worked a short while (year or so) with psychotics that had a history of violence. I agree with lonewolf and with Lee CT NE. A good friend of mine was finally forced to commit his wife. I watched that horror story unfold over a period of years -- this was way past tragic. The fellow had the patience of three saints.

That being said, it has been documented that during WWII, when staff abandoned some psych hospitals, a goodly percentage of the patients took over the duties of running these places. Go figure.

Talk about having to come up with 55 gallon barrels of tough love!

I dearly love my fiance BUT her daughter is paranoid schizophrenic.
She ain't none to bright either. I suspect her I.Q. might be low 70's at best.
If she were bright I suspect her p.s. might be much worse.
I've know people that appeared genius but were a half a bubble off center; five fries
shy of a happy meal.
Medicated she is o.k. at best but still pretty darned dumb.
If there was a collapse I'd leave my fiance and para skiz daughter to HER family to worry
about.
I live in the country on 15 acres of mostly woods with game to eat as well as prepping.
NONE of her family preps in any way and won't even broach the subject.
I can't care for everybody.
Hard? Sure it's hard, even harsh, but so is survival.
My fiance is a wonderful, independent business woman that has a decent income
BUT! She's legally BLIND.
She can't drive, can't cook, can't shop, can't much..................and darned sure can't SHOOT!
I could take her to my home in the country but she'd want her mentally ill daughter.
Can't do that.
Let her daughters perverted boy friend care for her.
Her daughters boy friend IS a pervert with over 200 porn flicks in his "library" and
he's screwing a mentally ill woman who is boarder line retarded.
I have no use for the creep.
I'll take care of me and mine and if I could you and yours.
My middle son, now 45, lives in my home in the country and he CAN cook, shoot, learn, etc.
I'd take my 17 year old also. He's my baby and a fine, decent, intelligent, young man and he
CAN shoot.

I've SEEN para schiz patients go postal and it's UGLY.
One man stabbed his 80 something mother to death in the FACE with a BUTTER KNIFE.
She must have suffered terribly before the long sleep.
Another mental case broke into a retired, single, elderly, teachers home and stabbed her
so many time that the coroner simply wrote "multiple stab wounds" on his report.
He used a pocket knife with a 2" blade and the deceased teacher was obese.
You know she died a lingering death by blood loss as he RAPED HER.
The nut went to a "hospital" for the criminally insane.
Want to bet they medicated him and he was released in a few years?
No wonder I have p.t.s.d.
I EARNED it!

 

I recall reading when the Japanese invaded islands to use a bases for Imperial expansion.
One island was a place were various nations shipped the insane and lepers.
The Japanese put them all on a barge, sent it out to sea and SANK IT!
I understand that. Not a nice thing to do and don't know if I'd take part in such but
I DO understand it.

Really? How are they going to do that.
Most likely the "home" is not very close to the facility they left.
It's unlikely prisoners will have any clothes, money, transportation..........................
Or is there a prisoner fairy that blinks things needed into existence?
Perhaps they will go to the nearest church and ask for Christian charity?
Very, very, few if any, of those I put in prison didn't commit crimes soon after legal release
let along prisoners escaping confinement in a post shtf world.
Felons leaving confinement legally in the best of circumstances re-commit and are
incarcerated once again.
Only 20% of those that re-commit get caught again. If they keep on committing criminal
acts they eventually do get caught. Or killed.
I was close friends with a man that did 7 years in a prison that did go straight and he was
a fine man.
Rare however.
A Pollyanna attitude might get you a poked in the brown round and killed.
I recall a man that I put away for about 6 hard years.
He started using a stolen gun to commit armed robberies again very soon after he was
released on parole.
I caught the guy in a bus station and grabbed him from behind with my revolver to his
head!
The idiot had a .25 auto in his pocket and tried to gut shoot me.
I crack upside his noggin stopped that crap.
Perhaps he's still in the joint. I hope so.

Please don't harp about the crime rate.
The U.S. is the largest melting pot of diverse races, cultures, and religions.
Sad as it is our freedoms are the very things that make it easy for criminals and illegals.
That is way we have courts and prisons.

The U.S does not have the highest homicide rate. Not by a long shot.
But the US is not even in the top 100 for annual homicide rates when compared to the rest of the world.

They are NOT in my prepper plans and the surviving world would be better off without them.

There is a body repairman that hides her car and repairs it in a day or so if possible.
If not she takes her moms car. She's wrecked that one also.

Surviving preppers don't need crazy people to care for.
If any prepper has abnormal or sick people to care for post shtf I'll pray for 'em.
I'm diabetic and without meds I'll die.
I know that. I accept that.
That won't prevent from from prepping however.
I just might live without the meds.

The leaf blower wouldn't start for her today so she threw it down and drove off in a huff.

She came back an hour later with a brand new $150 buck leaf blower and couldn't start that one.
I put gas in it and if fired right up.

The insane one has zero place in my plans for prepping. NONE.
Once she read about a total eclipse of the sun someplace in the world so she left again in a huff
returning with $100 bucks worth of flashlight batteries.

When no eclipse happened here in Ohio she tried to take the batteries back for a refund.
No dice.
She went to a jewelry store to buy a necklace on sale for $19 bucks and came back with $5,000 bucks
worth of jewelry.
The store took it back for a refund after her mother went ballistic.
The crazed one co-signed for a "friends" new Cadillac and got sued when when the "friend"
didn't make payments.
Nope. Not in my shtf plans.
The crazy woman ran a pick-up off the road and left the scene.
She's done that several times.
Why she has a drivers license is beyond me.

By the way. I do try to look after the poor woman as best I can but she resents any kindness.
