    Good morning all,

    Per ...

    It's a light-reading decent reminder type article.

What's the big difference re poisonous snakes and those not venonous ? The personal immediate first aid treatment is about the same: immediately tend to the wound with minimal exertion and evac to a med facility (exceptions of course exist).

Raccons with rabies are common enough during daylight hours. Didn't know the native american name for raccons but did know raccons were wearing masks wll prior to national family doctor Anthony Fauci recommending masks for COVID protection.

Here in the mid-Atlantic, the wildlife authorities deem the raccon population to be completely infected with the rabies virus. Recommend not to pet the creatures.

When dropping trees, you MUST know your game! Chainsaws and gravity will kill you.

When I drop a tree, I have two 3/4" manila ropes tied to it high-up to help define the vector of the fall direction. I define the angle, put the ropes to each side, like a pie slice -- the tree usually falls between the two ropes. This helps a whole lot; however, it is anything but perfect. Each rope is tightened using a "come along" wench. Remember, the cutting angle you use to define the fall direction CAN fail. To only have one rope is asking for trouble. The tree when cut can / usually will sway to either side of the rope direction. Having ropes is good, however this can increase the risk of kick-back, which is the trunk jumping off the stump in the opposite direction. This is a leg snapper. Your femur is only a little twig compared to the weight and mass of a tree trunk.

The tension one man can put on a rope means absolutely nothing. Humans are ants compared to the mass of trees. The tension required is hundreds of pounds. If you use a vehicle to apply tension, it too is insufficient AND you can lose that vehicle. Trees crush vehicles like bugs. I've only seen videos of this because I've never been around that sort of stupidity.

Before cutting, stand at the base of the tree and look up at the tree to determine if it is bent to a given direction. You can use a long level or a string with a weight at the bottom to determine true vertical. The mass of the tree is most often where it will fall irrespective of how you cut it or the tension you put on your two rope guides. Gravity always wins.

If the upper limbs of the tree you wish to cut are tangled-up with the limbs of adjacent trees, then the tree when cut could fall in a dangerous direction or could hang-up and not even fall -- had this happen to me a bunch when cutting in a forested area. Always define multiple exit avenues -- if you get stuck, you get dead.

If you are up in a tree topping it, you'd better think about how much weight you are releasing. If there is spring-tension on the trunk (bent / angled tree), then when topped, that trunk is going to spring back. When this happens, it can flick you off of the tree like a catapult. Even if you are tied to the tree, you can get slammed, even killed. Many have died like this.

If you are anywhere near power lines, then call in the professionals. Amateurs get electrocuted and can start fires.

The following videos are actually NOT funny. Several folk in these videos could have ended up in Intensive Care or the morgue.
