What is your and your groups attitude toward an apocalyptic event ? Would your attitude for survival for a year or more be positive or negative . I put a year or more because a short S.H.T.F. event doesn't even constitute a serious event in my prep ideology .

In my Special Forces training I remember the class we had on attitude . We were given the example of a proper attitude - As someone buried in the ground with just his head sticking out and you are snapping at the aggressors testicals with your teeth .

    Good afternoon Poltiregist,

Our consensus - a small group, all guys combat experienced, responder experienced and wives /girlfriends with critical skills - is that there will be some living and in decent shape "to weather the storm" because of advanced-level prep.

We do have a time-line of ~ 5 years for a completed national recovery - if it occurs ...... but 4 of us are "old" and not governed by apocalyptic matters; just the standard, good ol' traditional Todesangst - death anxiety.

My group is all family or neighbors and all are from these mountains. Life in these mountains has never been easy and no one expects life to be anything but hard. So keeping a good attitude during hard times is just what we do. Take every day, one day at a time and don't borrow trouble. It arrives without any help
I couldn't see that attitude changing due to a TEOTWAWKI event. You loose loved ones, you mourn and you keep living. Life goes on, with or without you. The choice is yours.
That's why my motto is "Never Quit"

Like you Poltiregist, if I'm breathing, I'm fighting to keep breathing.

many people will give up once a SHTF event happens, oh they will be okay if its just a few weeks maybe a month tops but if its the big one maybe a permanent state of affairs, a complete change to everything one has ever known then a lot of people will just give up and except the inevitable.
I say "never say die" the only time I will give up is when the last breath leaves my body, until then anything goes.

It is explained well in the movie "Martian." At the end he explains that you solve one problem and then the next and if you keep plugging along and solve enough problems you get to come home.

While I share the opinion, and Jim Valvano is my hero, "Don't give up. Don't ever give up." I don't know that my family members would last five years. It would depend on the severity of the event, and what is left, or what comes back after a period of time. They are far to dependent on maintenance medication to last five years. We would just have to do the best we could, and make things as comfortable as possible for as long as possible.

Yay, tho I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, because I am the meanest SOB in the valley. Bury me deep because even after death I will be coming back for a rematch.

Positive mental attitude is all important, being able to find joy in simple accomplishments and break insurmountable problems down into a series of manageable tasks will allow you to keep going when others are overwhelmed.
I don't really understand the OP though, I'm unsure how any survivalist or survivalist group could have a negative attitude to survival...apathetic I could imagine but negative?....no....if someone doesn't really want to survive they're probably on the wrong forum.

I have a very negative mental attitude. I don't think of myself as looking mean, however I've been told that I am actively avoided by some. I don't get it. Maybe I have some sort of negative gravitational force. Maybe they know the look of dark honesty. Now there's something to fear.

One of my sons has been told the same ... thinking about it, I myself would avoid him were I not his dad. He's kinda awful honest also. And damned big & hairy.

"Success is not an accident. It is the result of your attitude and your attitude is a choice"

My attitude is that there is no way I am going to sit back and die with the sheeple. I am way to stubborn for that. Never ever give up. I have no group attitude to worry over as it's just the two of us.

I did look at the group thing some time ago, tried to set up a few RV's but got sick and tired of all the excuses why people didn't turn up, which only went to reinforce my lone wolf attitude, so now its LW +1.

I actively fear sheeple. They stampede. Don't want to be near any form of stampede. If they get dead, oops too bad. I'll watch from a distance.

Heroes can be dangerous also. When they run out to save the world, I'll give them a big thumbs-up.

I own scopes and binoculars. Mind my own business. Prep only because bad people stray off their turf.

    Good morning Old Geezer,

    We have similar persona.

I,too, have a negative mental attitude and am actively avoided by some.

I believe this is because of - transference - .

It's akin to these people dreading looking at a dead person and by extension being in or near a morgue or cemetery. These people know, usually just unconsciously, that they are viewing their own fate and cannot mentally handle this.

Related to above: "They can't handle the truth".

    A favorite quote of mine:

"Consciousness is a disease" , Miguel Unamuno, "The Tragic Sense of Life", 1913

My attitude I guess came from being around people who had attitude. Poverty / wrong side of the tracks / raised by men who avoided the cops or paid them off; taught early on in life about all of the dark things via actual talking-to sessions and by witnessing the worst of life beginning at grammar school age. Going to church (dragged there by my mother) put it all together for me. "What?!" Sure, I saw the dead souls at church also, but they were dishonest. My dad's lot were an honest lot making an illegal living.

Did they serve? They got drafted. When their time was up, they were gone. When stateside, my dad went AWOL for sh##s'n'grins. These folk followed their own rules ... and were exceedingly honest about it.

"The demagogue is one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots."

"The men the American people admire most extravagantly are the most daring liars; the men they detest most violently are those who try to tell them the truth."

"The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods."

"Morality is doing what is right, no matter what you are told. Religion is doing what you are told, no matter what is right."

"The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule."

"People do not expect to find chastity in a whorehouse. Why, then, do they expect to find honesty and humanity in government, a congeries of institutions whose modus operandi consists of lying, cheating, stealing, and if need be, murdering those who resist?"

"The plain fact is that education is itself a form of propaganda - a deliberate scheme to outfit the pupil, not with the capacity to weigh ideas, but with a simple appetite for gulping ideas ready-made. The aim is to make 'good' citizens, which is to say, docile and uninquisitive citizens."

"Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats."

"Socialist: A man suffering from an overwhelming conviction to believe what is not true."

"Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule—and both commonly succeed, and are right."

"The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable."

"It is inaccurate to say that I hate everything. I am strongly in favor of common sense, common honesty, and common decency. This makes me forever ineligible for public office."

My attitude and plans over many years have been an evolving process. When I was young from my late teens through my early 20s I was ready to be a road warrior. This was in the early 70s and I was involved with a militia group of about 40 men. At that time I wasn't sure that we weren't heading into another sort of civil war. We were armed to the teeth and my primary place was as "Merlin". I can make nearly anything and have always been chemically interested and mechanically inclined. I was a journeyman booked machinest at 19 and doing gunsmith work on the side even then. I was young and dumb.

I mellowed a lot by the time that I was in my middle 30s. Part of this was the influence of having a wife and family responsibilities and part was that it was just a different time. My group had aged and somewhat settled and scattered. At that point, I seriously started thinking about bugging out and moving to a better place that was more survivable without having to fight a battle every day if things went bad. In 1988 we moved and started a new life. The place that we moved to was a rather secluded valley where everyone knew each other and we were 7 to 10 miles of dirt roads off any highway. In the event of TEOTWAWKI, we were well set surrounded by deep forests in a cleared vally filled with cattle, pigs, chickens, and deer. We had 10 acres and could have grown all the food that we would need easily there.

Once we were older and the kiddos were grown and gone we moved again. this time we were a little closer to a small country town population under a thousand on 3acres our dirt road now was only about a mile long but we were 25 miles farther away from Houston. This is where I will live until I Die. My kids have built beside me and we live like one family in two houses and share my Granddaughter. LOL. My attitude now is much more conservative than aggressive. If you attack me you will die. I will shoot you with a scoped rifle at a distance, blow you in two with a shotgun or just blow you up as you attack me. I don't want or need an assault rifle because I am not going to assault anyone. I'm not in the military. I have no objectives except to live as comfortable as possible I'm not going to wound you. I will kill you from a hardened site or from a distance.

My nature now has a more community leaning. Once the idiots have died and the thugs have all been killed the survivors will need to gather and reform into some sort of organized civilization. Places and people that don't do that will eventually be like the native Americans when the Europeans showed up. Organized groups WILL over time tak over from those that refuse to organize. It is just the nature of humanity evidently. If I am still alive I will help my area with that. I'm too old now to be the leader but leaders need advisors that know a lot of things about a lot of things.

Many years ago I read something that stuck with me,

Honor and Fidelity are the virtues of the barbarian. A civilized man will not soil his hands to right a wrong but will in secret, pay for the blood of innocents for his own gain.

    Sound like anyone you know?
