There is a lot more to this chart, it starts way back at really cold globally (to the left of this chart in the blue area) & very slowly has warmed up, BUT the time it has taken to do this is very long indeed, compared to the sudden rise in temperatures globally that we are seeing now. Basically we don't have very long left to do something about this before the point of stabilization. Too late to reverse what we are getting now, but if action were taken now we could stabilize. If we do nothing NOW, then our families down the track will NOT survive!!! This then is our biggest threat to human survival, & probably the survival of many other animal species.

Pretty chart, does not prove a darn thing. I can draw a chart, showing how folks would be better off sending their money to me. Does not prove they will be but I certainly will have more to spend.

Climate change is a real threat to the world, perhaps not to humans, at least not yet anyway. It is and will continue to affect bird and inset life, and this in turn will affect crops and crop yield etc. OK maybe for western style farming but so good for other cultures.

Despite a degree course and years of study I am still not wholly convinced that climate change is a totally manmade phenomenon, but I do suspect that it is exacerbated by the activities of humans. One of the key questions is whether the rise in CO2 is down to mankind's current activity or whether it goes back to the industrial revolution and its accompanying spike in coal use.

Either way we, as humans, do have responsibility to ensure our passage through time on this planet leaves a minimal footprint, we are, after all, only custodians of mankind's dream not the owners of the planet.

climate change may not be just human induced but human actions are increasing the effect, industrialisation probably has a lot to answer for.

It does, but there are suggestions that it is, in part, a natural phenomenon in that the planet should be more glacial than it currently is, suggesting that we are in between glacial periods (ice ages). Obviously the planet will warm up during periods of thaw which, in turn, release trapped CO2 within the ice caps, increasing global warming (there is a suggestion that this is happening now), the worlds sea currents are affected by non salt water slightly desalinating the seas, resulting in the cessation of the Gulf Stream and then another big freeze (ice age) follows.

In order for a graph chart to have any meaning you MUST identify the x and y axis's scale. this one doesn't even tell you what one axis represents.

If people really think that global warming is going to be the end of the world and that it is all caused by people then they should NOT have kids and maybe volunteer to commit suicide. The only way to reduce our footprint without trying to improve our technology is to MASSIVELY reduce the number of feet making all those foot prints.

It's not there as documented proof TMT, we already know that global warming is real. The chart is supplied to show just how the climate has been changing over millions of years without human intervention. It also shows when humans started to have an effect on climate change, & where that change is at present in relation to where it was millions of years ago. If you don't want to believe this, well you are not alone. The majority of people like you are dooming the rest of us to an uncomfortable life & eventually death.
Have you ever asked yourself "well why not do something? How will it hurt if I do all I can to stop global warming even if it is a hoax"?

Keith I am all for personal involvement but absolutely against the government trying to mandate how and what I should do. What good will it do to kill our economy if the rest of the world continues to contaminate the climate. We go broke and still die from global warming. No winners, a lose-lose situation. I can't think of any International agreement that has not been violated. Paris climate agreement was a joke and would have cost Americans a fortune and solved nothing. If you need an example just look no further than California and their mandate. That is going to bankrupt the state (even faster than they are doing now) and cause a huge exodus from the state. Businesses will leave in droves and the population will leave even faster than it is now. Again a lose-lose deal. If you can show me an affordable and viable solution, please do. Until the rest of the world demonstrates they are making changes, I see no reason to cut my financial throat.

That is the trouble, everyone is thinking like you are. So long as money & lifestyle are a priority over life, then humans are doomed to extinction. Is being homeless worse than death, worse than knowing that your great grandchildren will not survive? If people did not demand it, others would not be producing it. Well it is all about to hit the fan, living conditions are going to get worse despite people not wanting to lose what they have. That decision will be taken out of our hands. Denial is not going to stop this, sitting on their collective backsides is not going to make it go away. If this problem were to have been addressed back in the 18th century, or even in the 40s or 60s, people could have adjusted to a changed lifestyle, in fact had we moved over to alternate energy back in the 60s, we would not had to adjust to a different lifestyle.

But this didn't happen, & there is no point in crying over spilt milk. We have the chance to do it now, & this is the LAST chance we are going to get. This is not a conspiracy to rob people, this is not a joke, this is not some crazed sandwich boarder crying in the streets, this is the real thing & the majority of people are not taking this seriously. This will be the end of the world, you won't see it & neither will I. My boys will experience the discomfort, my grandchildren will have a hell of a time & my great grandchildren will not survive. We, my family have done & are doing all we can that can be done without completely leaving society. We live off grid in a forest, we are off all services, we use our vehicles as little as possible. If the government were to stop taxing us for our land, for the PP Board, for using compost toilets, then we would not have to use our vehicles at all. We would be totally self-reliant. It is not the homeless lighting fires in 44 gallon drums on winter nights that are responsible for the rise in global warming, it is everybody else & if they don't want solar panels on their roof because it spoils the look of their house, then they are going to be the cause of the end of the world.

Back to what the X and Y parm.s are. Vertical is time, ok. What is the horizontal parameter? Temperature, CO2 level, biomass of the Earth's forests, ... ?

One thing I know -- and this is not being questioned -- as CO2 levels go up, the biomass of forests has increased. This CO2 will cause more greening of the oceans which is not all positive. Atmospheric size will increase. More storms will happen which will greatly increase lightning events which will generate lots more new ozone to protect the Earth.

I WILL join the ecology crew when it comes to cutting rain forests. Evil! Japan parks lumber-processing ships off the coasts of continents. Forests are cut, processed on these ships, then the wood is sent back to greedy Japan. Japan destroyed their forests long ago. What is left, the Japanese protect and to do so, they take the trees from other countries (petty cash to the Japanese).

Wanna really slow the burning of fossil fuels? One solution is available. Nuclear power.

Well I don't know about anyone else here, but that stuff goes right over my head, so even if it was included on the chart, it would not make any sense to me. What does make sense is the sudden increase in global warming since the industrial revolution, that I can understand & for me that is quite enough.

keith you pointed out the defining factor, everybody has to be on board. That is an impossibility with all the diverse governments and peoples. So again, until ALL countries are doing their part, it does no good to be noble and self sacrifice your own livelihood. I am happy you are doing your part, but did it make any difference in the process? What you are experiencing is multiplied many times over when the rest of the world is not willing to do their part. Even if you are 100% correct it is man made or even aggravated by man, it will not stop until ALL nations get on board.

"Dangerous arctic blast ushering coldest air of 2023 across northern US"

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/could-january-end-arctic-blast-033211497.html

"An arctic blast looming this weekend has the potential to be the most significant winter cooldown for the northern tier of the country since December.

"The FOX Forecast Center said highs will be 25 to 40 degrees below average Saturday and Sunday for much of the central and northern Plains and Midwest, with highs more than 30 degrees below average from Montana to western Kansas on Sunday. This will correspond to temperatures staying in the teens and single digits.

"At night, lows will drop below zero for more than 20 million people across parts of 15 states from Idaho to Michigan.

"The coldest morning will be Monday as actual temperatures drop into the negative teens and 20s in Minnesota, the Dakotas, Wyoming and Montana.

"The wind will make it feel even more bitter with dangerous wind chills in the negative 30s and negative 40s. Frostbite will be possible in as little as 15 minutes."

Old Gzer: The "30-30-30 rule": If the wind is blowing at 30 miles per hour and the temperature is -30 F, exposed skin freezes in 30 seconds.

Does this mean that I will finally be able to turn off my AC for a little while???

Winter in South East Texas is more often than not just sort of a rumor. When we DO get a bad freeze though we are like a bunch of kids after watching horror movies all night. Watching us try to drive on ice is ...interesting.

When the roads ice-over, it is best just to stay at home. Weather reporters tell people to just stay at home, yet idiots go out when they shouldn't, then emergency crews have to come to their aid when they crash.

Chains and studded snow tires can only do so much. Black ice (invisible ice) on the roads is a killer. In England, you also get killer fog conditions. Was watching mass-crashes on YouTube yesterday and watched a multi-car / multi-truck pile-up that was caused by a pea-soup fog in England -- scary stuff. During WWII, when my dad was still in England (prior to D-Day), fog helped save the lives of my dad and his mates who worked out of a giant motorpool (tanks, armored vehicles, ... ). The fog in that particular valley was continuous thus shielding the operation from German aircraft.

My heart goes out to the emergency crews and to hospital staff who must work during these conditions. I've known a boatload of these folk due to the nature of my second career. In states where winter is an "adventure", medical folk have personal vehicles equipped to handle icy conditions. But still, one can only do so much to get around Mother Nature's fury.

Now that I'm retired, I'll just be looking out my window at the beautiful winter weather ... and building fires in the fireplace. Last week started a fire that almost melted my eyebrows. Was burning-off paper and cardboard trash that we'd let build up. That hot fire reminded me of my childhood days. As a kid, I'd build a fire in a fireplace then take a nap in front of it to stay warm. Trudge home from elementary school, take off my boots, start a fire, set my boots in front of the fire to melt the snow and ice, then curl-up and take a nap. Heaven.

Do other folk on this site get roads shut down due to fallen trees? We sure do here in Southern Appalachia. One great thing is that this state's highway patrol and road crews report blocked roads on a website paid by tax dollars. Now there is one example of socialism working (rare, but hey, credit where credit is due). I'm also a socialist when it comes to providing education. We sent our kids to public schools, paid tuition at a parochial school, and one private school. The wife and I have seen the differences in quality. The public schools ruined our oldest son because they couldn't cope with the kids whose IQs were over 140. They said they would = B.S. We should have pulled him, but he'd made friends there.

we often get roads closed by fallen trees out here in the British countryside, some winter storms not only take down trees but the falling tree takes out the electric supply so people have a power cut too, at the moment crews are dispatched to deal with the fallen tree and the downed power line, this wont happen post SHTF.
in the south west we often get landslides too.
