Deer

The Coast Guard pulled into our marina and dropped off a nice little forked horn buck that they fished out of a place called Clarence Straight. He was evidently trying to swim from one island to another and got caught in an outgoing tide. He couldn't keep up with the current and was headed for the open ocean. He was so weak he could barely stand and had to be helped up the dock to shore. He wouldn't have made it much longer if the CG hadn't showed up. He eventually wandered off the parking area and rested in a soft area by the road perhaps 30 yards or so from where they let him go.

Hope the bear doesn't come by as he couldn't run.

 

Nature can be cruel. Perhaps this deer will cheat death through the work of the coast guard. Certainly a feel good story, and also a reminder of how luck and perseverance can be intertwined. That poor deer was fighting for its life in the middle of the ocean beyond hope and didn't give up.

 

The guys that brought the deer ashore all had sidearms and there was a manned M-60 mounted on the bow of their boat. I won't go so far as to say Momma didn't raise a fool, but he is much younger than I.
