As per the practice in most small farms here, they raise chicken or ducks not just for the meat and eggs but also for the poop. Waste matter of fowls are good fertilizers especially for crops. After tilling the soil for the corn, they sow dried fowl poop to be mixed with the soil 1 week before sowing the seeds. The fertilized soil will be enough for the crops until harvest time. What they do is to keep the chickens or ducks in a coop so they can easily gather the waste matter and have it dried under the sun for 2 days.
