Why is that? This is not like eradicating the entire Culicidae family, its merely targeting specific species the Aedes aegypti

It is too late to worry about GMOs Dale. There is very very little left in our world nowadays that isn't a GMO. None of the foods we eat are naturally occurring organisms as they are. You have to understand that all GMO means is that a human adjusted it to better suit their needs or desires. Poodles are GMOs as are most domestic animals. The only thing that is different now is that we can modify the genetics of an animal in just a few generations instead of hundreds of generations. We have made some mistakes in the past. We will make some in the future but if we are going to survive in this changing world we are going to have to keep up with it and that will mean change.

If for example you wanted the world to use only seeds from original species and none that have been genetically modified in the last 200 years it would have a cost. We would have to either kill half of the humans alive at this time or let nature take its course and let 75% of the people starve to death slowly. Personally no matter what this may be our future. People are still breeding like rats and those that offer the least to the future are breeding at a pace 5 times higher than those that are trying to feed and support their endless number of kids.

We can only feed the nearing NINE billion people we have because our crops are many times more productive than they were. Our machines and modern fertilizers add to that productivity. We are very close to the point that either we will change ourselves or nature will do it for us. Evolution is just a slow natural form of GMO.

If something will prevent malaria and things like encephalitis from being spread by mosquitos it is highly unlikely to have bad side effects worse than what malaria used to do to people that lived in hot humid wet places. Nothing is without risk! Some people have terrible reactions to any of the various vaccines. There have actually been vaccines that were not allowed or removed from use because one in a million people died from a vaccine that protected people from a disease with a 5% mortality rate. We will accept 50,000 deaths from disease but not the 60 that might die from the allergic reaction to the vaccine. That is the wonderful world of litigation and politics.

In any living organism there is no way to know what other genetic contributions are made to the host species after splicing and in what manner that new genotype will express itself in following generations phenotype. There may be no unforeseen consequences but it might be like the GMO modifications to field corn which started killing butterflies. The belief that geneticist can be God is false. To be God is to defeat lucifer and geneticist are mere mortals.

To try and commit genocide of a insect species, will not work. It will create a resistant strain in the species that may then alter human transmittable diseases, alter how the species transmits other diseases to other wildlife species, change the species reproductive cycle, alter the species anti-coagulant that it injects into everything it bites and so many other things.

    Guess we will find out.

FYI - An introduced species of non native mosquito is contributing to the extinction of several Hawaiian birds.

    Good morning Dale,

    When I read and posted this article, my thought was that the mosquitoes are to be used for a twofold mission;

    1. Clear out Key West and the keys of middle class residents. Monroe County must be 90-95% public-funded with a little from residential real estate taxes. The NAVSTA at Key West can be saved for security. There's - or was - one of Polt's frat houses on Flamingo Key, a small SF training camp.

    and

    2. Some storm-uprooted palm trees with mosquitoes will be floated toward Cuber with ultimate purpose of getting the place back into the Western camp.

Testing mosquitos near Miami Beach doesn't fit the pattern.

Agree with you that mods to the mosquitoes will produce even worse mosquitoes, the humans' main natural predator.

Butterflies don't feed on corn pollen.

The population decline is due more to loss of habitat here (Milkweed) and rain forests in Mexico.

They did no real world study:

    More reality:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarch_butterfly

"In February 2015, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provided a statistic showing that nearly a billion monarchs have vanished from the overwintering sites since 1990. At that time, one of the main reasons cited was the herbicides used by farmers and homeowners on milkweed, a plant used as a food source, a home and a nursery by the monarchs.[135]

A 2016 study also attributed the last decade's ten-fold decline in overwintering numbers of the eastern monarch population to the loss of breeding habitat, namely the many species of milkweed (Asclepias species) that developing larvae require for food; however, scientists believe there are other factors as well.

A number of researchers believe milkweed loss during the breeding season is the cause because declines in milkweed abundance are highly correlated with the adoption of herbicide-tolerant genetically modified corn and soybeans, which now constitute 89% and 94% of these crops, respectively, in the U.S.

[128] However, correlative evidence does not prove causation, and other possible causes of the overwintering declines have been proposed. A 2018 study has suggested that the decline in milkweed predates the arrival of GM crops.[136]

    No mention of "Bt".
