Not too long ago a Colombian fisherman was rescued after two months adrift in the Pacific. His companions he said had died but many who read the article believed that he ate them. And it's not the first time people who are lost at sea decide to become cannibals.

I can surmise that they resort to eating other humans because they learned no survival skills.

If you are lost at sea . . . survival tips, please?

    why was he lost?
modern boats have all the up to date equipment on them, and we have coastguards.
mind you i'm a pure landlubber myself, I nearly drowned when I was 12 and since then the only water I go in is the shower!:D

The skiff's engine broke down and from then on they were adrift. He was rescued about 2,000 miles off the Hawaiian coast. It must have been quite a voyage — Colombia to Hawaii and you aren't in control.

I don't think they had any sails. Probably something mariners should take into account. Engines can die. Either stay close to the coast or have a Plan B should your vessel's engine fail.

engines tend to die at the most inappropriate time.
in the old days it was safer to travel by boat than go across land, which back then was covered in dense forests with many wild animals roaming about.
but they tended to stay close to the coast or use the rivers .
