    Good afternoon all,

Yes, the article is in the New Republic. Perhaps we should hold off on abandoning hope. Maybe there is a Supreme Being.

Some of those mentioned in O'Connell's new book are following FEMA's guidance to "Prepare for realistic worst-case scenarios". Here, there's no worry about melting Polar ice sheets; just the swamp and lagoon creatures always getting reelected.

Intellectuals still in Scotland ? After devolution ?

That last paragraph is bewildering ... actually it's not. Forgot I'm posting something from New Republic. "humanity's strength...empathy...cooperation..." ... My ancestry's history and my experience say otherwise.

The New Republic is a commie rag.

"The preppers envision social collapse in crude terms: They foresee widespread looting and gang violence as supply chains break down, believe civilization is a “thin veneer” over humanity’s fundamental brutality, and think gun-toting Rotarians will restore law and order to the countryside when violent urban refugees arrive trying to steal resources. This disgusts O’Connell, who perceives its racial overtones and its pessimism about humanity. “This is a prediction of the future,” he concludes, “that could be offered only by someone who was never fully convinced by the idea of society in the first place.” And despite his own anxieties about the future, he is often moved to make flippant remarks about the preppers’ actual plans for survival. “If the choice on offer is between pasta primavera mix with freeze-dried chicken chunks and being among the first wave of deaths in the apocalypse,” he comments, “I hereby enthusiastically place my order for oblivion.”"

"However many hatchets or bean cans a person might collect, individual preparedness is always going to run up against limits. The problem with prepperdom isn’t that its adherents lead unappealing lives or hold regressive social views—although many do. Its weakness is that it forgets that humanity’s strength, historically, lies not in individual stockpiles but in its capacity for empathy, communication, and cooperation."

Don't'cha all just wanna hold hands and sing, "Kumbaya"! Plus, there's the matter of most urban folk being utterly incapable of showing empathy, willingness to communicate (unless you consider looting a form of communication), and the ability to cooperate. Some good folk live in today's Sodom and Gomorrah cities, however they should have the good sense to leave these pus-pockets of sin.

Hopefully, all of these elitists-with-attitude will all die during one of the coming real SHTF events. I'm counting on God annihilating those who have stood in public and given Him the middle finger. The Big Guy wiped-out Sodom and Gomorrah, the very least He can do is take out L.A. and NY, NY. In all of the world's Holy Books, the Prophets have given a heads-up to the faithful that the sinful cities will be destroyed. Me, I stay away from the big cities if at all possible. Been there on business, but when I left, I kicked the dust off my shoes.

Ive never considered myself a prepper before, but what I see going on in the world has made me reconsider. I think it's a good idea to prepare for the best of times, but also the worst of times. With the way the world is heading, things can get real bad real soon. But if somehow disaster doesn't strike, I say good. Being prepared for an apocalypse that doesn't happen is still good. I think people give preppers a bad image when they prepare individually, but then expect the government to rescue them when things get bad.

    Good afternoon Joe,

Preppers are a refutation of socialism.

Preppers max out individual efforts in preparation for and response to emergencies and worse.

    Thus, the socialists demonize us.

Prior to the nation adopting a socialist mercantile society, the Preppers were the Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts, adhering to the Cold War civil defense programs and helping family stock a first aid kits, some extra water jugs and extra food.

Colonial times onward to circa Vietnam War, it was common to "Be prepared".

Preppers are individuals and have the ability to think for themselves , they are not part of the general herd of population who seem to do the same as everyone else and do not prepare even for minor events, they rely on the system for their everyday needs.
