This is like every other "the sky is falling!!!" disaster that the idiots dig up and the media and politicians use to scare the crap out of people. Fear makes people STUPID. Stupid people are then easily led down bad paths or taken advantage of. Of the many things that will kill Americans and Europeans this coming year I will guarantee you that deaths from this specific virus won't be anywhere in the top ten causes of death. The REALITY is that it is just another version of the flu. It is not appreciably more deadly than any other type.

China and their problem in no way translates to how the same problem would affect Western nations. They are constantly teetering on the knifes edge of disaster. Too many...WAY too many people with a very insufficient ability to feed, clothe and house this many people not to mention a health system that is woefully inadequate, behind the times and underfunded.

This like all diseases of its type are going to be big KILLERS in places where there are a lot of people in a VERY small area that are underfed and that have inadequate sanitation. There is one section of Wuhan that has 26,000 people per kilometer square. Masks won't help those people very much. As more and more people get sick their services will break down. China is still very dependent on human physical labor compared to western nations. The poor in China are not like the pampered poor in the US. They are working poor that lead hard lives with very little to show for it by our standards.

I have no doubt that their death count will be high. fo one thing there are 1.38 BILLION of them. Their health system is nothing like ours. Many, if it gets out of the cities, have very minimal access to medical care. They have reason to fear...we don't. If you live in the heartland of America or Great Brittian and need to worry and fear something there are a lot of more likely things to GET you than this. More people will commit suicide in the US this year than will die from this virus. Deaths from auto accidents will outnumber it probably by a factor of a hundred! About as many will drown.

Life is about living not dying. Live each day with joy and thankfulness and when your time comes to meet it with a clear heart and no fear. Death is not the end...rather it is a beginning much like when a seed falls from a tree.

    Good morning TexDanm,

Real good; my view also - another version of the flu. The same common-denominator requirements need to be practiced; hygiene, decent diet, etc.

Another example of the population density:

Hubei Province, with it's major city of Wuhan, is about the size of North Dakota or the state of Washington. Hubei has a population of 60 million. Thus, a place the size of North Dakota is filled with the population of both California and New York.

The other problem is that they have a...different sort of adaptation that is in most cases an advantage that in this case is a terrible disadvantage. All people are NOT the same. Some of our differences are cultural but some are in our genes. Oriental people tend to be smaller in physical size on average than other races. That is a genetic fact that has in the past been added to by poor diet and starvation that made being big an unlikely disadvantage. They also seem to greatly prefer or at the very least have a lot more tolerance for close quarters than the other races.

Each person has a personal space that they are comfortable with. Two people when they meet will stop and talk at a mutually agreed-upon distance apart. If someone gets too close to you it will make you uncomfortable and you will try to back up or get very stiff and uncomfortable.

Americans in an elevator are an interesting study as each person tries to deal with too many people being too close together with no way to relieve their discomfort. People in the South are more space needy than Americans from the North. A lot of the "feeling" that Southerners get of Yankees being pushy is that when they first move into the south or if a Southerner goes to the north the Yankees get closer to you to talk. The difference is a matter of a couple of inches but it is there.

Oriental or EASTERN people don't seem to need ANY personal space to be comfortable and will get almost skin to skin and be totally comfortable. When the boat people came to the US they settled thousands of them along the Gulf Coast in Texas. They gave them houses and helped them settle there. Three brothers with three houses each with a wife and kids would then immediately all move into one house and rent the other two houses out. They were impossible to compete with! Their cost of living was vastly lower than three Texas brothers in the same business. They nearly totally took over shrimping for a while.

This comfort for close quarters allows them to live in small places with a lot of others all around them. That saves on resources and makes them hard to compete with on a business level. It is going to make it simple for a virus to infect them in MASS. If some of your family and some of your friends are sick, those that are not can take care of them. When ALL are sick at the same time the same disease that might have low mortality can take a BIG jump. This is part of what we are seeing in that overcrowded urban area over there.

    Good morning TexDanm,

    Yes, indeed.

For all: "boat people": Vietnamese refugees from war.
