    "Heart of Darkness"

Conrad didn't randomly choose the name of his book.

    Power corrupts.

Centralized government, people as peasants, such always leads to oppression.

Western governments today disarm the people, enable savages, and run a protection racket. In socialist countries, taxation on individuals is over 60% of their income. Note that the EU thinks it needs more savages to keep the orderly people in order.

Abusive husbands rape their wives into submission.

    So do governments.

    Good afternoon Varuna,

Look at map of Africa, the big land mass south of Europe.

At bottom of Africa, locate Republic of South Africa.

Now, look north, north east. There it is.

I remember at one time this country was richer than the rich country of Republic of South Africa.

    Matters change.

TMT, thou must be not so harsh!

Maybe they should get them a Kenyan King. Amerika had one and he solved all of the problems he said he would solve .... with the help of his Grand Vizier Valerie Jarret, the Persian Princes. He balanced the budget and raised up black people to exalted stations. He and his true Princess, Val, were even as gods.

Has anyone read the book by Ian Smith “Bitter Harvest: The Great Betrayal and the Deadly Aftermath” about how the west turned its back on Rhodesia? The result is the shit show called Zimbabwe. Since it’s out of print, I can’t afford the going price on Amazon. I’d love to read it one day. I’d love to hear first had thoughts on the book.

I worked with a former officer in the Rhodesian SAS who fought in the bush wars. The stories he had but never really talked about. Too bitter for him. Lots of good books on the fight for Rhodesia. There are a good couple dozen books on this. This is how America will fall. It will be brutal and ugly. The PSL of the late 70s had lots of good lessons applicable today as well. Know what’s coming.

Rhodesia used to be a great country but with the communist and liberals help we have another cesspool. There people, the wildlife and the land itself is suffering for the worlds decision. Seems like someone wants all of Africa back the way it was in the 1800's.

As a kid I remember reading all of the articles in Soldier of Fortune magazine about the bush war in Rhodesia and I had saved up enough money for a plane ticket to Rhodesia when I turned 18. She fell a couple years before I could go. I wanted a chance to join the Selous Scouts. I went U.S. Army special ops instead.

South Africa seems to be on the road to the same mess.

The same story that led to the fall of Rhodesia is being played out all around us today. Shady billionaires financing and encouraging mayhem, sowing of racial hatred and Balkanization of society, backstabbing nations relishing in the fall of nations, etc...

I have Ian Smith's book somewhere in storage. And many others on the Rhodesian war. My parents moved to Rhodesia specifically so that my father could join that war. He did. He never liked to talk too much about it. There are many things that happened in that time that never become wide knowledge beyond Rhodesia/Zimbabwe.

I have five of his books, one is autographed by him. All great reads. His America hunts were fairly uneventful.

Sir, that is truly AWESOME! People today look up to ball players and performers as hero's. Fredrick Selous was a HERO in every sense of the word. Explorer, Professional hunter, military officer and conservationist! I don't believe they make them like that anymore. Those books are precious sir. I hope you still enjoy them. Thanks for sharing that. If you don't mind me asking, which books do you have?

I got to read Sport and Travel, East and West as a kid (our library had it) and I read articles in hunting magazines he had written and sections of books they reprinted. I read everything about him I could find as a kid. He impressed me.

How did you come by a signed copy? There has to be a story there.

I consider Fredrick at the top of the Pro hunters of fame. People like him, Philip Percival, Harry Selby. These guys were men. No one heard them whining about how life treated them.

Zimbabwe or Rhodesia as it used to be called went downhill as soon as a certain Robert Mugabe got into power, it went from being "the bread basket of Africa" to being a basket case, the rich-Mugabe and his cronies- got richer and the poor-that is most of the population- got poorer and poorer, I don't think anything has changed now that thankfully Mugabe is dead, its still the same sort of people in power.

I bought it at a gunshow in Palmer, Alaska.

I have Samuel L. Bakers, "Wild Beasts and their Ways" (a second printing 1890, Leather bound)

"Baker left a wealth of study in the science of hunting firearms and ballistics, and accounts as one of the world's few hunters that used the two bore rifle, the world's largest gun calibre for the purpose. He described in great detail his observations of the animal world, account in which, his book Wild Beasts And Their Ways (1890) ranks highest".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Baker#:~:text=Sir Samuel White Baker, KCB, FRS, FRGS (8,and Major-General in the Ottoman Empire and Egypt.

Interestingly. I have "Old" books on Hunting either Alaska or Africa, most I have read, and planned to reread when I got old. Sadly now I am now old and rapidly going blind.

I need to sell all this stuff. Strangely no one will help, or can help. This is not a plea for help, just a problem of where I live. This is a vexing problem, with no apparent solution. Sadly someone will throw this "Junk" in the trash, not knowing what it is.

Sir, It sounds like you have the collection of a lifetime. I believe these people (https://www.sothebys.com/en/ ) may be able to assist you and may be able to direct you to an auction house that will sell your more modern items.

There is a store in Anchorage that sells such items also. I remember them from my trip which is unusual for me to remember a store unless it's very nice. https://www.lazydoganchorage.com/

    Hope this helps

Sourdough, by the airport in Soldotna there is a used book store that buys books at a fair price. They have books stacked to the ceiling, but the place is always busy and books still sells. I don’t know if you get out that way. I might be interested in a good book or two as well!

Rebecca, do you think Ian’s book is worth the read? Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

You must have a great story to tell about your experiences! From reading the PSLs and from the books, it was horrifying and brutal particularly for those living in the rural areas. I am sure the cities were bad too.

My friend I spoke of above found his way to South Africa then to the US. He lost family during the battles, so it was tough on him in many ways.

I think the book is definitely worth the time to read. It is obviously heavy on the politics of the time and covers what many Rhodesians saw as the betrayal by the UK and South Africa. My parents said it was factual if put more diplomatically than their personal opinion of the events. I wish more people could have read it to gain a better understanding or some understanding at least of what happened because the vitriol even now aimed at the men who fought that war by people with no concept of the situation is terrible.
I usually avoid the subject completely not because I am embarrassed by the situation but because I don't need to listen to people degrading my father for fighting and it's a sure way to start an argument. At least on here anyway its hopefully less likely to happen.

Mam, Anyone that has not been in combat and who degrades any soldier, is a coward and a fool. Men enlist for higher ideals and principles. We fight, and sometimes die, for the brother next to you.

Rebecca, we see, at least the non-socialist Liberals see, the results of black leadership in Africa. That is not racist comment but simple truth. When the black majority was given self rule, they started killing whites and driving their economy and country into the ground. I don't think you are going to get much back lash for stating facts. Unlike the "Inclusive Tribe" we actually do allow and encourage free speech.
