We had a friend who used to be a homesteader. He lived on his homestead which is 4 hours of walking to the nearest neighbor. As per his story, he started with 2 female goats and 1 male. His best bet was actually the chickens which are faster to multiply but when his breeder goats became 5, think of the milk that they can get. What’s good in the goats is you just let them loose but you have to put a fence if you have a vegetable garden for they would eat anything. And with just a pail of drinking water for the 5 breeding goats, even a child can take care of them. A bonus with the goats – they are the natural lawn mowers so the grass in the vicinity will be trimmed by the goats.
