Newlywed woman, 24, dies in Alaska river trying to reach famous 'Into the Wild' bus

"A newlywed woman from Belarus died in Alaska Thursday after police say she was swept away by a strong current while crossing a river to reach an abandoned bus featured in the popular book and film “Into the Wild.”

The couple, married for less than a month, was attempting to reach an abandoned bus where hiker Christopher McCandless died in 1992."


The bus has been the source of multiple rescues since it was made famous, first by Jon Krakauer's book published in 1996 and then by Sean Penn's 2007 film. (Erikhalfacre)

 

Sadly all too common up here. Wilderness (near wilderness in the case of the bus) is a very unforgiving place.

 

A) Why didn't they rope themselves together? B) Why try to cross where the water is so rough? C) Why is this national news? Darwin award winners should not be national news imo.

 

Mother nature is always ready to hand out "Darwin awards" to anyone that fails to heed her warnings.

 

Good morning all,

A 24 year old foreign visitor, presumably on a tourist visa, arrives in Alaska.

She and new husband transferred the cost of their visit desires to the public sector. The rescue efforts were not free; there's a cost along with risk of responder life.

If that bus was the "source of multiple rescues", the bus was a public danger. Is not the state of Alaska ... in theory, at least ... there are surely MANY of these types of tourist attractions ... obliged to mark off the bus location as a prohibited area ?

The fence and signs can be funded off of the Native Alaska Corporation of non-resident natives - probably living and thriving in Malibu and and Carmel , California.

The public is being taken for a bus ride to poverty.

My vote goes to Son of Liberty and Tex Danm. Viva le "Darwin Awards" !
